January 25, 2007 BRADFORD
The Covington Lady Buccs rolled to their sixth straight win and eleventh win in the last twelve games with a convincing 45-20 victory over neighboring rival Bradford.
The victory improves Covington's record to 14-3 on the season and 9-1 in Cross County Conference play, while Bradford drops to 3-14 and 2-8 in the CCC.
"I'm pretty pleased (with the effort)," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "They gave us a different look (defensively) than we expected by the girls adjusted well."
Covington scored the first 11 points of the contest with three treys, - two by Ashley Johnson and one by Andrea Meyer - and a jumper by Alex Christian.
After regrouping with a timeout with 3:13 left in the first, Bradford got rolling with a pair of three-pointers of their own. First, Angel Yount connected on a long trey and Ashley Floyd followed an Andrea Meyer jumper with another Bradford three-pointer to close the gap to 13-6 after one.
"We gave up a couple open looks to good shooters," Besecker said. "We played pretty good defense other than those two possessions late in the first quarter."
Covington defense was as stingy as ever in the second period, rarely allowing Bradford a shot and holding the Lady Railroaders scoreless throughout the stanza.
Meanwhile, five Covington players scored in the period to account for a 19-0 advantage and a 32-6 half time lead.
"They (Bradford) came out in a diamond-and-one (defense)," Besecker described. "They've pretty much played man-to-man in the past, so it was a little bit of a surprise. It was good because it's the first time this year we saw that type of a defense. The girls did a good job of adjusting on the floor and hitting the open shots."
Bradford found some offensive success in the second half, much of it coming from Kristin Fike.
Fike scored all eight Bradford points in the third period and finished with a team-high 12 points, all coming in the second half.
Still, Covington scored 11 points in the third to increase its lead to 43-14 as the entire bench saw the floor in the 25-point win.
Andrea Meyer led all players with 13 points, including three successful attempts from behind the arc.
Alex Christian dropped in 12 points, while six other Lady Bucc players reached the scoring column in the victory.
Covington looks to keep its winning streak alive as it travels to Jackson Center on Saturday in non-conference action.
Bradford looks to rebound as it host Northridge on Saturday.
