November 25, 2006 – FAIRLAWN
Covington coach Chris Besecker's has been open in regards to his fear of injuries with this year's Lady Buccs basketball team.

"We don't have a lot of depth, so we have to stay healthy," said Besecker prior to the season.

Tonight against Fairlawn, Besecker's worst fears came true as defensive specialist Chelsea Tebbe went down hard in a scary moment at Fairlawn High School.

The incident happened with 1:41 left on the clock and Covington holding on to a slim 29-26 lead.

In typical Tebbe fashion, she was hustling for a loose ball and plowed into the bleachers along with a Fairlawn player. The crowd became silent as Tebbe remained down for minutes in pain, holding her leg that took the brunt of the impact.

Although the Lady Buccs managed to hold on for a 32-28 win, the victory was the last thing on the minds of those who made the trip from Covington, including Coach Besecker who was understandably difficult to track down for a post-game interview.

Covington struggled in the early going as it scored only four points in the opening stanza.

Meanwhile, Amanda Francis canned two treys and a jumper to score all eight of Fairlawn's first period points.

To make matters worse for Covington, Alex Christian took a shot to the nose and was forced to sit out the remainder of the half with a towel and ice bag on her face.

Looking for a spark, Besecker made an adjustment in the second quarter by putting Tebbe on Francis.

The result was what Covington needed as Francis failed to score a second quarter point while the Lady Buccs began finding the mark with their own shots.

After a basket by LauriKate Baymen to open the second period, Andrea Meyer trilled a trey and Ashley Johnson followed for two more three-pointers. Seeing an 8-4 lead evaporate so quickly, Fairlawn took a timeout with 2:46 left in the half and Covington holding a 15-8 lead.

The Lady Jets then scored their only point of the stanza on an Emily Everett free throw. Ashley Johnson canned a long range jumper and then Andrea Meyer closed out the half with her second trey to put Covington up 20-9.

Fairlawn battled back in the third period as Francis opened the second half with two straight steals in which she converted into easy lay-ups to cut the margin to 20-13.

Alex Christian finally was able to come back into the game and immediately contributed with a short jumper. Tebbe followed with a baseline jumper of her own to push Covington's lead back to 24-13.

Francis responded with a three-pointer to cut the lead to 24-16, but Andrea Meyer scored five straight points on two free throws and a third trey.

Fairlawn was able to score before the end of the third period as Jessica Prince connected on a 10-footer to make the score 29-18 with one period to play.

Covington went cold from the field in the final 8:00 as it failed to hit on any shots. The only points the Lady Buccs could managed in the fourth period was three Andrea Meyer free throws.

In spite of a Fairlawn run down the stretch and the unfortunate injury to Tebbe, Covington was able to hold on for a 32-28 win.

Andrea Meyer led Covington with 16 points, including three treys.

Amanda Francis led Fairlawn and all scorers with a game-high 21 points.

Covington improves to 2-0 on the young season, but the attention is directed toward the status of Tebbe.

Hopefully the news will be good.
