November 24, 2006 – COVINGTON
It was a special night at Covington High School for Chris Besecker and Lady Buccs basketball.

First, the coach with the most wins in school history (275) was inducted in the Covington Athletic Hall of Fame prior to the Lady Buccs taking the floor for the opening game of the season against Houston.

Then, the Lady Buccs showcased the style of play that has led to those 275 previous wins and placed Besecker into the elite class by dominating the Lady Wildcats for a 54-23 win.

"Yes, we wanted to win it for him (Coach Besecker)," said Alex Christian when asked about the importance of the game. "We really want to carry on the winning tradition he has established here. This was a great win."

As much as the evening meant to the players, the coach diverted attention from his Hall of Fame induction and directed his praise toward his players.

"My only concern coming in was if the Hall of Fame thing would become a distraction for the kids," said Besecker. "It's about the kids and that's why I've coached so long."

Besecker's kids played typical Besecker basketball by hustling on defense and executing offensively.

The Lady Buccs jumped out to a 17-4 lead by the end of the first period as Andrea Meyer scored nine points in the stanza, including a long range trey.

Meyer continued the hot hand in the second quarter with two more three bombs to lead Covington to a 27-11 half time lead.

"They (Houston) were hounding Chig (Andrea Meyer) all night long," said Besecker. "We knew they would do that, but she was able to find the open shots in the first half."

Houston continued to hound Meyer in the second half, but this only opened thing up for Alex Christian in the post.

After the Lady Wildcats ran off six straight points to open the second half, Christian scored nine straight points to push Covington's lead to 36-17 with 2:00 left in the third.

"Al (Alex Christian) got into some foul trouble in the first half, but she picked it up in the third quarter," Besecker described. "Houston's backside help started moving out on Chig and Alex was able to get to the basket."

Christian, who scored a game high 21 points, just took what was given to her.

"I was just trying to get open and make shots," Christian said. "We were patient and my teammates just got me the ball when I got open."

One of those teammates was senior Ashley Johnson, who didn't have huge statistics but contributed in so many different ways. Johnson only turned the ball over once the entire night from the point and found the open shooters all night long.

She did score five points, including the final trey to make the final score 54-23.

"Overall we played pretty well for our first game," reflected Besecker. "We looked good at time and made some mistakes we need to work on."

Covington has four more games in seven days, so tired legs could become a factor.

"We're not very deep, so we'll have to contend with that (fatigue)," continued Besecker. "We just don't have a lot of options to go to off the bench this early in the season. As the season progresses and our younger players become comfortable with the system, we may have more options."

Covington had two players in double figures with Christian scoring 21 points, 15 of those in the second half. Andrea Meyer dropped in 18 points, 15 coming in the first half. Meyer also canned four treys on the night.

The Lady Buccs (1-0) travel to Fairlawn tomorrow.
