January 27, 2007 – JACKSON CENTER
Every time the Covington Lady Buccs travel to Jackson Center it seems to be a house of horrors. The Lady Tigers always find a way to give Covington everything it can handle...and more.

So, when the Lady Buccs got out to a big first half lead and cruised to a 44-28 victory, it wasn't a surprise Chris Besecker was more than pleased.

"That's a tough place to play," the Covington coach said. "They (Jackson Center) gave us one of our losses last year and they always bring good defense. I'm always happy when we can come out of there with a win."

Jackson Center entered the game with a 4-10 record, which is deceiving considering the competition it plays on a regular basis.

"They are better than their record," praised Besecker. "They've had some close games and play in a tough league (Shelby County League).

It didn't take Covington long to get going as it jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first 2:19 of the contest.

The Lady Buccs forced three turnovers in the run that resulted in lay-ups, while Ashley Johnson and Andrea Meyer connected on back-to-back treys.

"The kids set the tone early defensively," Besecker explained. "We forced a few turnovers and got some easy baskets as a result of it. That got us some confidence and momentum."

After a Lady Tiger timeout, Jackson Center closed out the first period with six points. But Covington maintained a 10-point lead on an Otte trey and a free throw by Alex Christian.

The Lady Buccs opened the second period like they did the first, going on a big run.

Meyer started things off with a free throw, while Ashley Johnson followed with two straight lay-ups off of steals.

Meyer closed out the 9-0 run with two straight jumpers to put Covington up 25-6 and force another Jackson Center timeout with 4:29 left in the half.

"I told the girls before the game that we needed to pressure the ball," Besecker described. "We knew they had a good inside game with (Kristi) Platfoot, so we had to keep pressure on the ball and deny her the basketball. We did a pretty good job of that in the first half."

They did as Platfoot only managed to score five first half points, three of those coming from the free throws line.

Platfoot did end the Jackson Center scoring slump with a lay-up, but Covington closed out the first half strong with a Renee Otte trey and an Alex Christian jumper.

"Renee had a great game," said Besecker. "She did a very good job defensively and crashing the boards on the offensive end."

Covington didn't have the same success offensively in the second half, but it didn't matter. That's because the defense was relentless in holding Jackson Center to just seven third period points and 28 for the entire contest.

"We executed very well defensively," Besecker continued. "We forced them into a lot of turnovers, which got us going at the offensive end. We hit some big shots to get a nice lead."

Covington had three players score in double figures with Andrea Meyer leading the way with 13 points.

Ashley Johnson scored 12 points and Renee Otte connected for 11 points.

Kristi Platfoot led Jackson Center with 11 points.

Covington improves to 15-3 on the season and host Frankin Monroe on Thursday.
