Febuary 8, 2006 – UNION CITY
After a convincing 67-31 victory over Mississinawa Valley to close out the regular season, Covington coach Chris Besecker was pleased with the performance of his Lady Buccs.

"We played well considering the weather hasn't cooperated this week," Besecker said. "We wasn't able to practice much, but the kids responded and put together a solid effort."

Winners of nine straight games and 14 of the last 15 games, Besecker is also pleased with how his team is playing heading into the upcoming tournament.

"We're playing well," Besecker continued. "The last game we didn't play to our potential was at Tri-County North. Other than that, I think we've played pretty well."

The effort against Mississinawa was as balanced as it has been all season for the Lady Buccs. Three players scored in double figures with Ashley Johnson leading the way with a game-high 17 points, while Andrea Meyer and Alex Christian each scored 16 points.

"I think we are executing the offense better this year than we did last year," Besecker explained. "We're moving the ball around and being more patient finding open shots. That's why we have two or three players scoring in double figures each night."

Covington jumped on Mississinawa Valley in the first quarter to build a 13-5 lead as Johnson came up big in the stanza with a trey and a two-point bucket. Meyer, Christian and Chelsea Tebbe each found the bottom of the net as well.

The Lady Buccs found the going tough in the second period as shots started bouncing off the rim on a regular basis.

Meanwhile, Mississinawa found the range with its own. The home team outscored Covington 12-7 before a pair of Johnson jumpers made the score 24-17 at the half.

The Lady Blackhawks continued the hot hand to open the second half by outscoring Covington 6-4 to cut the lead to 28-23 and force a Buccaneer timeout.

"They made a run on us at the end of the first half and beginning of the second half," Besecker said. "We knew this would be a battle. A road game, their senior night - they were pumped up."

Covington followed the timeout by closing out the third period on a 15-2 run to increase its lead to 43-25.

The Lady Buccs then closed the show with a 24-point effort in the fourth, while holding Mississinawa to just 6.

"We stepped it up defensively in the second half," said Besecker.

Covington ends its regular season with a 17-3 record overall and 11-1 in Cross County Conference play.

The Lady Buccs enter the Sectional Tournament as the second seed and will face Ansonia next Wednesday at Tipp City.

Should Covington get to the Sectional Final, Mississinawa could be waiting.

"Including us, five teams from the CCC are in our sectional," Besecker said. "We could very well see them (Mississinawa) again. Of course we have to get there first. We have to come focused and ready to play against Ansonia on Wednesday."
