January 6, 2007 COVINGTON
After Thursday's rather ugly performance in a lopsided win over National Trail, the Covington Lady Buccs put together their most stellar performance of the season in 47-29 win over New Bremen, Saturday.
"I'd say this is the best we've played this season," praised Covington coach Chris Besecker of his team. "Obviously it was better than what we saw on Thursday (against National Trail)".
New Bremen, who falls to 5-6 on the season with many losses coming against stiff competition, took it to Covington in the first 8:00 by connecting on numerous back-door lay-ups to build a 12-9 lead.
"They were getting some easy baskets in the early going," said Besecker. "Once we dialed in on how fast we had to move defensively, we took over the game."
Did they ever.
Covington outscored New Bremen 15-4 in the second period and closed out the half with a 12-0 run.
Alex Christian celebrated her 18th birthday with a game-high 20 points, including 13 in the first half.
Andrea Meyer scored 10 of her 19 points in the first half as well, including two treys in the 12-0 run.
"They were in man and we didn't get the ball inside like we wanted," explained Besecker in regards to the first half. "Chig (Andrea Meyer) was aggressive taking the ball to the basket, which opened up the inside game."
But it was the Lady Buccs' defense that got Covington rolling.
"Our team defense was real solid," Besecker continued. "We got some turnovers there in the second quarter and it got us some momentum."
The Covington "D" continued to shine in the third period as the Lady Buccs held New Bremen to just six points in the period.
Covington received five straight points by Christian and a lay-up and a three-point play before Meyer and Renee Otte closed out the third with a pair of baskets of their own.
With a comfortable 33-22 lead heading into the final quarter of play, Covington slowed the game down to take time off the clock.
Neither team managed a field goal for 4:00, but Covington was able to extend the lead to 40-23 by converting 7 of 8 free throws.
Christian finally broke the shooting slump with a runner followed by three of four free throws by Otte and Ashley Johnson to make the score 45-25 with less than 2:00 to go.
Andrea Meyer then closed out the scoring for Covington with a jumper as Besecker rotated the players left on the roster until the final buzzer.
"I'm very pleased with the way we played," Besecker concluded. "New Bremen is a very good team. Their record is deceiving because they've played a brutal schedule. Their losses are to some great teams like New Knoxville and Lehman. This was a big win for us."
Covington improves to 10-3 on the season and has a week to prepare for Twin Valley South next Saturday.
