November 30, 2006 COVINGTON
Newton and Covington opened conference play in girls basketball with the Lady Buccs coming out on top, 59-20 at Covington High School.
"Opening up the league schedule with a win is always nice," said Covington coach Chris Besecker after his team improved to 3-1 on the season. "The girls have the mindset of defending the conference championship and this was the first step."
Despite of the 29-point victory, Besecker wasn't totally satisfied with the performance.
"We looked sluggish at times," he continued. "Our transition defense wasn't particularly good at times and we didn't execute the offense like we should on a consistent basis. There are some things we need to work on."
Covington opened the contest with two straight three-pointers, first by Renee Otte followed by Andrea Meyer.
But, two of the defensive breakdowns Besecker referred too in his post-game comments happened on back-to-back possessions as Emily Myers converted easy lay-ups in transition to make the score 6-4. This prompted Covington to call a timeout just 3:22 into the game.
"We didn't get back on defense," Besecker described. "Plus, we had a couple of possessions where we didn't execute, so we called a timeout to talk it over."
The talk worked as Covington went on a 9-2 run over the remainder of the quarter, a run capped by a trey by Ashley Johnson.
Covington maintained the momentum in the second period by outscoring Newton 13-5, including a second Johnson trey.
Leading 30-11 to start the second half, the Lady Bucc "D" shut the door on the visiting Indians. Covington held Newton without a second half field goal until a Kaitie Stewart jumper with 1:14 left in the period.
Meanwhile, Andrea Meyer found a hot hand by scoring 8 of Covington's 16 points in the stanza to increase the Buccaneer lead to 46-16 with one period to play.
After a Newton basket by Shannon Schlater to open up the fourth, Covington scored 13 straight points on a pair of free throws and two baskets by Alex Christian, a jumper and a free throw by Renee Otte, and a baskets each by LauriKate Bayman and Jennifer Lowry.
Newton's Sarah Bradley closed out the contest with a jumper to make the final score 59-20.
Alex Christian led Covington with a game-high 18 points, while Andrea Meyer dropped in 15 points. Johnson, Otte and Bayman each contributed with 8 points.
Newton was led by Emily Myers and Kaitie Stewart with six points.
Covington was 4 of 8 from behind the arc, all four treys coming in the first half.
The Lady Buccs converted 7 of 9 free throws, while Newton was 2 of 8 from the line.
Covington travels to Versailles on Saturday, while Newton gets a nice break before hosting Miami East on December 7th.
