The Covington Lady Buccs defeated conference rival Newton 52-17 Wednesday to advance to the sectional final on Saturday against Bethel, who defeated Mississinawa Valley.
Despite the lopsided score, Covington coach Chris Besecker didn't feel his team was clicking on either end of the floor.
"They (Newton) pretty much played a triangle and two the whole game," said Besecker. "Against that defense, it's a matter of executing. We didn't execute the way we are capable of."
Covington struggled hitting open shots in the first half, but still held a 12-2 after one and a 22-4 lead at the half.
All 22 first half points came from three Covington players as Alex Christian and Andrea Meyer each scored 8 and Chelsea Tebbe scored 6. Six of Meyer's first half points came on a pair of treys.
"We had a lot of good looks, but were not finishing shots," Besecker described. "We talked about that after the game. We need to finish better than we did tonight."
Covington opened the second half with a pair of Christian free throws, a stick back and a traditional three-point play by Meyer. But Newton scored six straight points to close the gap to 29-10 and forced a Covington timeout with 1:38 left in the frame.
"We were allowing them to penetrate," explained Besecker. "Even in the first half, they (Newton) was able to dribble penetrate. I look at what type of shots they (the other team) is getting."
The Lady Buccs responded with a three-pointer by Ashley Johnson and a pair of free throws by Meyer, but Keeley Booher closed out the third with a jumper to make the score 34-12.
Covington closed out the contest with a strong final 8:00. Renee Otte started things off with a three-pointer to spark a 12-1 Covington run.
Ashley Johnson followed Otte with her second trey and hit on a lay-up, while Meyer and Christian scored on short jumpers.
After a Booher trey, Covington responded with a LauriKate Bayman runner and a pair of Shelby Hoblit jumpers to make the final score 52-17.
Andrea Meyer led all players with a game-high 17 points, while Alex Christian dropped in 12. Meyer's two treys moves her into first in Covington's all-time list for three-pointers, passing her cousin Michelle Meyer with 130.
With Bethel on the horizon, Besecker knows his team has to come ready to play.
"We need all five players on the floor to bring their "A" games," said Besecker. "If you don't, sooner or later you'll get beat."
