January 22, 2007 – LEWISBURG
It wasn't the normal routine for the Covington Lady Buccs and the result was a lackluster performance against Tri-County North on Monday.

Still, Covington claimed a 47-19 victory to improve to 13-3 overall and 8-1 in Cross County Conference play. Tri-County North drops to 10-6 on the season and 5-5 in conference play.

"Monday night, on the road and no JV (junior varsity) game - let's say it wasn't our normal routine," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "But, the tournaments could be like that too. You have to be ready to play every time you step on the floor."

It was obvious from the outset the Lady Buccs were not mentally into the game the way they have been against recent foes, Arcanum and New Bremen.

Covington only converted on three field goals in the first period as shot after shot bounced off the rim. On one possession midway through the first, Covington missed on five shot opportunities.

"Our shooting wasn't good at all," said Besecker. "Especially early in the game. We missed a lot of open looks."

Covington wasn't the only team to struggle offensively as Tri-County North did everything it could against the normally stingy Covington defense, but score. It only made one first period field goal and trailed 9-3 at the end of the stanza.

"We were not on our toes defensively," Besecker described. "That's (defense) our M.O. and we weren't focused."

After a basket by Tri-County North's Sarah Whitaker cut Covington's lead to 9-5 to start the second period, Besecker had seen enough. He called a timeout to get his team refocused on the task at hand.

"You notice we went on a 10-0 run after that," Besecker said with a grin. "We were getting outplayed when the score was 9-5, so I called a timeout to talk about it."

Whatever Besecker said worked as Covington picked up the defensive pressure and became more aggressive offensively.

The result was two three pointers by Andrea Meyer, two free throws and a lay-up by Chelsea Tebbe off of a Meyer steal.

Leading 19-5 to start the second half, Covington picked up where it left off before the break.

Andrea Meyer drilled her fourth trey of the game to start things off and Ashley Johnson added two more three bombs by quarters end to help push Covington's lead to 34-11.

"Andrea started to find her range," Besecker said. "She's capable of getting hot at any time and she gave us some momentum."

Meyer, who scored a game-high 22 points, concluded her evening with a fifth trey midway through the final period as Covington took a 47-19 win.

"It's obvious we didn't play as well as I'd like, but it's always good to get a win," said Besecker.

Meyer was the only player on either team to score in double figures. Ashley Johnson and leading scorer Alex Christian each contributed with 8 points.

"We didn't get Al (Alex Christian) going inside," Besecker continued. "When that happens we struggle and we did tonight."

Still, a win is a win and it's the fifth in a row and tenth in the last eleven games for the Lady Buccs.

With two more games left this week against Bradford on Thursday and Jackson Center on Saturday, Covington is looking to get back to its normal routine.
