December 21, 2006 – COVINGTON
The basket must have seemed 10-feet wide for Covington's Andrea Meyer Thursday night in the Lady Buccs' 50-32 victory over Russia.

The senior scored in just about every way possible en route to a season-high 25-point performance. She accounted for four of Covington's six treys, scored on four two-point baskets and hit on 5 of 8 free throws.

"Andrea had a heck of a night," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "She was on her toes playing great defense and she was on with her shot. She had one of her better nights tonight."

But it's not the statistics that was impressive about Meyer's performance. It was the way she sparked her team when they were struggling to find the basket midway through the third quarter.

Russia had just scored six straight points to close a 25-16 half time deficit to 25-22.

Covington couldn't buy a basket as it was held without a single point for the first 4:05 of the second half. The Russia defense was stifling, leaving Covington just four free throw attempts to score points - all of which were off the mark.

Meyer then took over the game by driving to the basket for a lay-up and went to the free throw line for a three-point play.

Alex Christian followed with a short jumper to push the lead to 30-22, but Russia's Kristin Drees responded with a jumper of her own.

Meyer closed out the third by scoring five straight points on a pair of free throws and a buzzer-beating three-pointer off of a well executed offensive set.

"That (the three-pointer) was a big shot," described Besecker. "We had 10 seconds to work with and our plan was to work the ball into Al (Alex Christian) in the post. They (Russia) closed down on her and she kick the ball out to Chig (Andrea Meyer). It was very well executed."

Meyer wasn't done.

She opened the fourth period with a steal and a lay-up to increase Covington's margin to 37-24.

Dee Rosenbeck responded for Russia with a three-pointer to apparently kill the momentum.

After each team turned the ball over on consecutive possessions, Meyer canned her fourth trey of the game to kill any momentum Russia had established.

Another Russia turnover resulted in an Ashley Johnson trey as Covington broke the game open with a 43-27 lead.

The Lady Buccs then cruised the rest of the way for a 50-32 win.

Meyer was the lone player on either team to reach double digits in scoring, much to the pleasure of Besecker who prides himself of his team's defense. But, it was Meyer's offensive performance he was pleased with tonight.

"She worked for every point she got," Besecker said. "Russia just kept coming with defensive pressure and Chig just kept working to get open. Like I said, she had a heck of a night."

The victory improves Covington's record to 7-2 overall as it hosts Milton Union Saturday evening at 6:00.
