January 13, 2007 – COVINGTON
Everything went right for the Covington Lady Buccs in a 70-20 victory over Twin Valley South, Saturday.

A season-high eight Covington players scored on the afternoon, with three going for double figures, as the Lady Buccs connected on 18 of 41 shots from the floor and 8 of 18 from behind the arc. Covington also converted on 10 of 15 free throws on the afternoon.

"Overall I'm pleased with our effort," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "We had a number of kids step up."

Ashley Johnson set the tone offensively with three treys in the opening stanza to account for all of her nine points on the day.

Additional baskets by Alex Christian, Renee Otte and two jumpers by Andrea Meyer allowed Covington to build a 19-6 lead at the end of the first.

Covington hit a dry spell over the first 4:00 of the second period as it could only manage two Amanda Sprankle free throws.

Meanwhile, the Lady Panthers received back-to-back jumpers from Jennifer Bambeck to cut the margin to 21-10.

"We have to maintain more consistency in our offensive execution," Besecker said.

As it has done all season long, the Covington "D" got things going again as Chelsea Tebbe picked up a steal and a lay-up followed by another steal that resulted in an Andrea Meyer trey. Alex Christian scored on a traditional three-point play and Tebbe followed with yet another steal and a lay-up.

In all, Covington forced 31 Panther turnovers, while committing just 10.

"Cheslea (Tebbe) had six steals," Besecker said. "Renee Otte's game is coming along as well. She does a nice job defensively."

Otte also picked up her game offensively with a career-high 13 points.

She forced a Panther timeout with 1:06 left in the half by sneaking in the back side for a lay-up and Andrea Meyer closed out the 15-0 run with a trey before the buzzer to make the score 36-10 at the break.

"It's nice to see Renee being more aggressive," Besecker continued. "She's looking for her shot more, which is good to see."

The Lady Panthers opened the second half with its first three-pointer of the contest by Lindsey Vogue.

Covington took command once again by outscoring the Panthers 18-2 over the remainder of the period to increase the margin to 54-15.

Meyer accounted for 10 of the points, including a four-point play after being fouled on a successful three-point shot and converting the free throw.

Over the majority of the second half and throughout the entire fourth quarter Besecker rotated his bench to get his younger kids some varsity action.

The results were positive as Covington didn't miss a beat over the final 8:00.

Shelby Hoblit connected on a short jumper, followed by a Meyer lay-up and a LauriKate Bayman runner.

Otte and Hoblit combined to hit on 2 of 4 free throws on Covington's next two possessions and Renee Otte followed with two straight three-pointers to push the lead to 68-17.

Vogue connected on her second trey for South's final points of the night, while Amanda Sprankle ended the contest with a short jumper to make the final score 70-20 in favor of Covington.

Meyer led all scorers with 22 points, including three treys. Sophomore Renee Otte recorded a career-high 13 points, six of those coming on a pair of fourth quarter three-pointers. Alex Christian contributed with 12 points and 8 rebounds, while Ashley Johnson scored 9 points - all coming on three treys in the first period.

Chelsea Tebbe recorded 6 assists to go along with her 6 steals and 5 points.

The Lady Buccs also held a significant edge on the boards, 35-25.

Covington improves to 11-3 on the season and 6-1 in the Cross County Conference.
