November 28, 2006 TIPP CITY
The Covington Lady Buccs found out a little about themselves as a basketball team against a very talented Tipp City team, Tuesday.
What they discovered is they could hang right in there against teams with a significant height and depth advantage.
"I couldn't be more proud of the effort these kids gave tonight," said Covington coach Chris Besecker after his Lady Buccs fell to Tipp City, 40-31. "That (Tipp City) is a very good basketball team with a lot of height, talent and athleticism. Our girls played very hard until the end."
Covington, who only had six players see the floor, held Tipp City to just nine second half points and shut out future collegiate player Lauren Sharpe in the final two periods.
This, without having the services of defensive standout Chelsea Tebbe who was watching from the bench due to an injury suffered on Saturday.
"Defensively, we played as well as you can expect in the second half," Besecker described. "We held a great basketball team to nine second half points."
Covington's undoing in perhaps pulling out a victory was a sluggish first half and missed opportunities from open looks at the basket.
Tipp City scored the first nine points of the game and held the Lady Buccs scorless until an Amanda Sprankle lay-up three minutes into the game.
The Lady Red Devils extended the lead to 13-2 before Alex Christian scored six straight to cut the margin to 13-8.
Lauren Sharpe closed out the first period with a trey to extend the lead to 16-8.
"We struggled early with their full-court pressure," Besecker said. "We basically lost the game in the first quarter because we didn't handle the pressure."
The Tipp defensive pressure continued in the second period as Covington managed just one basket in the first six minutes of the stanza.
Meanwhile, Sharpe and company scored 11 points in the same time frame to increase the margin to 27-10.
The Lady Buccs outscored Tipp 8-4 over the remainder of the half to cut the margin to 31-18 at the break.
Covington picked up the defensive pressure to start the second half and never relented, but neither team could manage a third period field goal until a three-point play by Alex Christian with 3:18 left on the clock.
Tipp City followed with a Leah Schiller bucket, but Covington managed to close the gap to 36-24 with one period to play.
Covington had its chances to get back into the game in the final 8:00, but couldn't convert on open looks at the basket.
The Lady Buccs had five shot attempts on one possession, but three shots behind the arc and two short jumpers were off the mark.
Andrea Meyer did connect on Covington's only three-pointer with 5:03 left in the game to bring Covington with 40-29.
Even though the Lady Buccs defense shut out Tipp City the rest of the way, they couldn't buy a basket themselves as the final two points of the contest came on two Renee Otte free throws.
"We didn't shoot the ball well at all, but a lot of that had to do with their pressure defense," said Besecker. "Both teams got after it on defense tonight."
Alex Christian led the Lady Buccs with 13 points, while Andrea Meyer scored 7 points.
Lauren Sharpe matched Christian's effort with 13 points, all coming in the first half.
Although giving up a significant size advantage, Covington held a rebounding edge over Tipp City, 38-36.
"Rebounding is an attitude," Besecker described. "It's attitude and hustle and we played that way."
Covington drops to 2-1 on the season, while Tipp City remains unbeaten at 3-0.
The Lady Buccs are back in action on Thursday as Newton comes to town.
