January 4, 2007 NEW PARIS
In spite of capturing a lopsided 51-19 victory over National Trail to start the new year, Covington's performance was one Chris Besecker will not put in the archives of how to play Lady Bucc basketball.
"It (the way Covington played) was ugly from start to finish," Besecker said without hesitation. "We were lackadaisical and not very crisp tonight."
Coming off an emotional and intense game against Miami East last week, it was obvious from the outset that Covington wasn't focused on the task at hand and was going through the motions.
National Trail, owners of an 0-9 record coming in, played with more emotion and drive and held Covington to just seven first quarter points, all coming from Alex Christian.
While the Covington offense stalled, the defense picked up the slack - holding National Trail to just four first period points on a pair of baskets by Jennifer McWhinney.
McWhinney opened the second period with a basket before Covington's Ashley Johnson responded with a trey.
Another McWhinney basket followed to make the score 10-8 and prompted Besecker to take a timeout.
"We wasn't getting the ball inside," described Besecker. "We have to get the ball inside early and often."
The ball went inside on Covington's next two possessions as Alex Christian and Amanda Sprankle scored back-to-back buckets to spark a 19-0 run.
As the Blazer defense clamped down inside, the ball went outside where Andrea Meyer scored 10 points in the run to give Covington a 29-8 lead at the half.
"We have to go to Alex (Christian)," Besecker said of his post player who scored a game-high 21 points. "It opens everything up. She's tough to defend because of her athleticism and it also opens up the perimeter."
Covington opened the second half with seven straight points on a trey by Meyer, and baskets by Chelsea Tebbe and Christian to increase the margin to 36-8.
But suddenly the Lady Buccs reverted to their sluggish mode over the remainder of the period as National Trail outscored Covington 6-4 in the final 6:00 of the third to make the score 40-14.
"We have to do a much better job of taking care of the ball," Besecker said. "We had too many mental mistakes."
After a Courtney Flory basket got National Trail started in the fourth, Alex Christian took over with three straight baskets before heading to the bench for the night.
Renee Otte followed with a three-point play and Jennifer Lowry came off the bench with a nice runner to close out Covington's scoring.
National Trail then converted 3 of 4 free throws in the final minute to make the final score 51-19.
To go along with Christian's big night of 21 points, Andrea Meyer dropped in 13.
National Trail was led by Jennifer McWhinney with 10 points, eight of those coming in the first half.
While Covington improves to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in conference play, National Trail is still looking for its first win, falling to 0-10.
