December 7, 2006 – NEW MADISON
Two teams with different aspirations hooked up at Tri-Village High School Thursday night as defending Cross County Conference champion Covington handed the host Lady Patriots a 63-30 defeat.

For Tri-Village, it's about striving to be what Covington is - a program with at least 20 wins in the past three years and back-to-back conference championships.

"They (Covington) are at the level we want to be," said Tri-Village coach Brad Gray. "They are the defending CCC Champs and have a lot of talent every year. We had a big wake-up call tonight on how far we have to go."

For Covington, it's about getting to another level of play.

"We want to improve every night out," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "We made some mental mistakes at times because of a lack of focus. We want to improve and not fall into bad habits."

Covington took control of the game from the outset, jumping out to an 18-6 lead by the end of the first period.

Andrea Meyer knocked down a three-pointer after Tri-Village cut the margin to 8-3 and then Ashley Johnson followed with back-to-back treys.

The Lady Buccs followed an impressive first period with a dominant second period by outscoring Tri-Village 11-5. Meyer closed out the half with her second trey followed by a lay-up to make the score 29-11 at the break.

"Defensively, our effort was great," Besecker mentioned. "We played with a lot of effort and passion on the defensive end."

Covington continued to torch the nets in the third period as Ashley Johnson canned her third trey, while Alex Christian and Andrea Meyer knocked down some big shots to spark a 16-point period.

Tri-Village's offensive struggles continued as it managed just seven points against the stingy Buccaneer "D". Those seven points came on bucket by Kaley Stahl, a three-pointer by Jordyn Fisherback and a free throw each by Tina Allison and Stahl.

Trailing 45-18 to start the final period, Tri-Village put together its most productive 8:00 of the game.

Kaila Burns started things off with a lay-up and Stahl followed a Margrett Cobb free throw with a short jumper to force a Covington timeout.

"We lost our focus there in the fourth quarter," Besecker described. "Good teams play hard for four quarters and we were getting a little sloppy defensively."

After an Alex Christian three-point play, Shawnda Stamps scooted through for a lay-up to make the score 54-25 at the midway point of the quarter.

Covington's LauriKate Bayman finished strong with 10 points down the stretch to make the final score 63-30.

In spite of the frustrating defeat, Coach Gray sees some positives for his young team.

"We are young," Gray said. "These girls work hard and have positive attitudes. We just have to bring them along and help them get better."

Missing from the line-up was junior Addie Overfield, who manages the game from the point guard position. Overfield has been sidelined due to a knee injury suffered in the first game of the season.

"We're missing her presence on the court," Gray continued. "We don't blame injuries for a loss, but not having her on the court hurts."

Covington had its weapons on the court, including Chelsea Tebbe who returned for a full game of action from an ankle injury. Tebbe never scored, but her defensive impact was significant.

The Lady Buccs had four players score in double figures with Andrea Meyer leading the way with a game-high 18 points.

Ashley Johnson knocked down 17 points, including three successful attempts from behind the arc.

Alex Christian and LauriKate Bayman recorded 14 and 12 points respectively.

"Offensively, we could have done a better job of executing at times," Besecker concluded. "We have to keep working hard and improve on every possession."

For Tri-Village, Kaley Stahl was the lone performer to reach double figures with 10 points. Tina Allison contributed with 6 points, while Kaila Burns had 5 points.

With the victory, Covington improves to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in Cross County Conference play.

Tri-Village drops to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the CCC.
