December 2, 2006 – COVINGTON
Basketball is a game of fundamentals, execution and attitude. It's a game of rebounding, playing solid defense and hitting the open shots.

Unfortunately for Covington, the Versailles Lady Tigers performed well in all phases of the game, while the Lady Buccs didn't.

Versailles controlled the boards, unofficially recording 27 rebounds to just 10 for Covington.

The Lady Tigers created 18 Covington turnovers and committed just 6.

Versailles scored points at will, while the Lady Buccs missed numerous open looks.

But, the most determining factor in the game was the overall size and athleticism of the Lady Tigers and the lack of depth for Covington.

The result was a frustrating 54-28 defeat, dropping Covington's record to 3-2.

"Our effort was there, but we were on tired legs," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "This is our third game in five days and with a six player rotation, that's difficult to overcome against a team like that (Versailles).

The Lady Tigers improved to 3-0 and are obviously a serious contender for a very long tournament run. They have size, athleticism and bring it for four quarters.

"They (Versailles) are obviously the most talented team on our schedule," Besecker continued. "They may be the best team in the area and I would be surprised if they don't at least make it to the regional finals."

Covington did jump out to a 5-2 lead as Andrea Meyer scored on a jumper and then canned a long three-pointer.

But, the wheels came off in a hurry as Versailles scored the remaining 11 points in the stanza to take a 13-5 lead.

Things didn't get any easier for Covington in the second period as it managed just five more points in the stanza, all coming from sophomore Renee Otte.

Otte connected on a lay-up to open the stanza and later hit a trey.

Still, despite the offensive struggles, the Lady Buccs' defense kept them in the game going into the half. Versailles managed just eight second period points of its own to take a 21-10 half time lead.

The wheels fell off in the third period as Covington was held without a field goal until an Alex Christian lay-up at the buzzer to end the third period. The only other Covington point in the third came on a Chelsea Tebbe free throw.

Covington missed numerous open looks at the basket as the frustration grew.

"We missed way too many easy shots," Besecker described. "We got the ball in position for open looks, but didn't convert."

Versailles took advantage to put the game away with 17 third period points to take a 38-13 with one period to play.

The Lady Tigers emptied their bench, but still held the upper hand in the action.

Covington did manage its most successful offensive output with 15 fourth quarter points, but Versailles scored 16 points in the period for a 54-28 win.

No Covington players reached double figures for the first time this season as Alex Christian and Andrea Meyer both led the way 9 points. Renee Otte contributed with 7 points.

For Versailles, Justine Raterman recorded a game-high 15 points in just under three periods of action.

"She's a player," complimented Besecker. "She's probably the best post player in the area."

As frustrating as the afternoon was for Covington, there is time to regroup before the Lady Buccs travel to Tri-Village on Thursday in a critical Cross County Conference match-up.

"I don't know if we need to regroup," said Besecker. "They (Versailles) were obviously the better team and they'll do that to a lot of teams. We just need a rest. We'll give the girls Monday off to rest and come back at it on Tuesday to prepare for Tri-Village."
