December 6, 2007 – ANSONIA
To say the first quarter has been a nightmare for the Covington Lady Buccs this season would be an understatement. That's because the most points Covington has scored in the first period in any of the seven contests was 12 in a victory over Newton.

In the other six games (all losses) the Lady Buccs have scored a combined 16 first quarter points. In three of those games Covington failed to score a single point in the opening frame, including Thursday's 25-18 loss to Ansonia.

"We're just not shooting very well," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "We had some open looks, but we're not knocking them down. It looked for a while like we were going to get shut out for the half."

The Lady Buccs almost did, until a Katie Dickey stick-back with 1:01 left in the half. Otte followed with a runner at the buzzer to at least give Covington some momentum while trailing 13-4.

"It (not scoring points early) puts pressure on us defensively," Besecker continued. "We're playing pretty good defense, but we have to nearly play perfect defense with the way we are playing offensively."

One factor in Covington first half offensive struggles was Shelby Hoblit sitting on the bench with three fouls throughout the second period.

"That (Hoblit being in foul trouble) pretty much took away our inside game," Besecker said.

Covington offensive woes continued over the first 4:00 of the third period as it failed to hit the bottom of the net.

Suddenly Renee Otte scored on a runner and a lay-up on back-to-back possessions to cut the Ansonia lead to 15-8.

But again the offense went dormant as the Covington failed to cut the deficit further heading into the final frame trailing 17-8.

Fortunately for the Lady Buccs, the effort on defense began paying dividends in the fourth quarter as the Tigers picked up two quick fouls to send Katie Dickey and Renee Otte to the free throw line in which they converted on three of four attempts.

Shelby Hoblit followed with a short jumper to cut the margin to 17-13 and force a Tiger timeout with 6:14 left in the game.

After a Lesley Pitsenbarger basket gave Ansonia a little more cushion, Covington responded with a four-point possession. Renee Otte went to the line and connected on the first of two attempts. Katie Dickey pulled down the rebound on the second attempt and found Kayla Fissel wide open for a trey.

The freshman calmly drilled the shot to cut the margin to 19-17 with 5:02 left in the game.

"We had some momentum at that point," Besecker described. "That was a big possession that got us back into the game."

As quickly as Covington's offense found a hot streak, it vanished.

The Lady Buccs could only managed just a single point the rest of the way as Ansonia went on a 6-1 run to close out the game.

"We need some confidence," said Besecker. "We also need to work on being stronger with the basketball. It's fundamentals and we'll continued to work to get better."

Covington falls to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in Cross County Conference action.
