BROOKVILLE — Graduating nearly everyone but Renee Otte off a district championship team a year ago, most experts would have penciled this in as a year Covington girls lose in the first round of the tournament.

They were wrong — which is a testament to how far the Lady Buccs, with a roster that includes no seniors, have come.

Covington defeated Arcanum 43-34 Monday night at Brookville in Division IV action. The Lady Buccs will play Bethel at 7:30 p.m Thursday night.

“It definitely means a lot,” Renee Otte, who has led the Lady Buccs all season. “We are going to keep battling. We are not going to give up.”

The team reflects the attitude of coach Chris Besecker.

“I think any time you have a young team, that (winning a tournament game) should be a goal,” Besecker said. “These kids have (battled all year).”

And while Covington defeated Arcanum 38-28 in the regular season, Besecker knew Monday’s win would not come easy.

“They didn’t have (Maci) Kramer in that game,” Besecker said. “That gave them another player for us to contend with tonight.”

A game that swung back and forth was decided in the final five minutes. Ironically, it was after Covington’s Shelby Hoblit picked up her fourth foul with 5:22 remaining that the game swung.

It was tied 29-29 at the time and Besecker called time out.

“Shelby (Hoblit) does a great job on the boards,” Besecker said. “That is one of the reasons we need her on the floor. One of the things we talked about going into the game was getting back on defense and playing good half-court defense.

“That foul came from us chasing the ball. So, I talked to them about that. Another big thing was we went to a zone defense.”

Kayla Fissel hit the second of her three 3-point field goals and Renee Otte scored off a Katie Dickey assist to put Covington up 34-29 with 3:25 left.

Then, Alyssa Angle and Fissel came up big down the stretch to seal the win.

Leading 34-31 with the ball, the Lady Buccs called timeout with 1:21 remaining.

Coming out of the timeout, Angle got an offensive rebound and putback at the 1:10 mark to make it 36-31.

“That was a big basket by Alyssa in that situation,” Besecker said.

After a three by the Lady Trojans Devon Meyer got Arcanum within 38-34 with less than a minute remaining, Fissel made the shot of the game.

The freshman showed the nerves of a senior, finding nothing but net with a 3-point shot.

“If I were doing chalk talk, that’s probably not a shot I want to see,” Besecker said. “But, I like the way Kayla (Fissel) shoots the three. I started to say something when I saw her squaring up, but I didn’t want to distract her. I like her 3-point shot.”

Otte made four straight free throws down the stretch to help seal the win.

“Renee (Otte) does make a lot of plays for us,” Besecker said. “Sometimes, she tries to do a little too much, but she did a nice job tonight. That (18 points) is a pretty typical game for Renee.”

The Lady Buccs had gotten off to a fast start, jumping out to a 10-1 lead. Hoblit scored the first three points, Otte made two baskets and Fissel added a three.

But, by early in the third quarter, Covington was trailing 23-18 and struggling against Arcanum’s half-court trap.

“It was a replay of the first game,” Besecker said. “We jumped out 12-2 and then they went to that pressure.”

The other factor was Arcanum scoring double digit points in the first half on second-chance points.

“We weren’t boxing out,” Besecker said. “We talked to them about that at halftime.”

The Lady Buccs were not going to be denied. They led 28-27 going to the fourth quarter and took control down the stretch.

“We just knew we had to eliminate the mistakes we were making against their pressure,” Otte said.

Otte finished with 18 points and eight rebounds. Fissel scored nine points, while Hoblit had seven points and 12 rebounds.

Emily Schellhaas had 10 points and six rebounds for the Lady Trojans, while Meyer added nine points and five rebounds.

Covington was 15 of 29 from the floor for 52 percent and nine of 15 from the line for 60 percent.

Arcanum was 15 of 56 from the floor for 27 percent and two of four from the line for 50 percent.

Covington won the battle of the boards 29-24, but had 21 turnovers to the Lady Trojans 11.

The Lady Buccs overcame that and now have another tournament game to get ready for on Thursday against Bethel.

“Now, that we have won one, we are not going to be satisified with that,” Besecker said.

Monday night, like the entire season has been, was proof of that.
