December 8, 2007 - COVINGTON
The Covington Lady Buccs had every opportunity to knock off rival Bethel Saturday, but let it slip away by not taking care of the little things. The result was a 41-36 defeat that drops Covington to 1-7 overall and 1-3 in the CCC.
"We had a golden opportunity to get a win," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "But we didn't box out when we needed to and didn't take care of the basketball."
The biggest break Covington had was Bethel's Ashley Bennet sitting on the bench throughout the contest.
"She (Bennett) scored 15 on us in the tournament last year," Besecker said. "What a break for us that she wasn't on the floor. We didn't take advantage though."
Covington, a team that has struggled offensively throughout the season, received a huge offensive performance from Renee Otte. The junior led all players with a career-high 27 points.
"Renee had a good game offensively," Besecker praised. "She was aggressive with the basketball and took the ball to the basket. We just need more than one kid scoring points."
Bethel built a 12-4 lead late in the first quarter as Brittany Lewis found the hot hand with six points in the frame. Lewis would lead Bethel with 14 points.
"She's a nice player," Besecker said. "We had trouble with our inside game again as we got into some foul trouble."
Covington close out the first period with a trey by Otte and then cut the margin to 14-12 in the first 2:00 of the second quarter.
But Bethel went on a 7-2 run to take a 21-14 lead at the half.
"Every time we got close we would turn the ball over," described Besecker. "We have to be stronger with the basketball and not let the other team take the ball out of our hands."
Otte, who scored 16 of her 27 points in the second half, willed Covington back into the game in the second half.
She tied the score at 28-28 with a jumper and a free throw early in the fourth quarter and Alyssa Angle followed with a jumper to give Covington its first lead.
But a defensive laps cost Covington as Bethel scored eight straight points to take a 36-30 lead.
"We had some momentum when we took the lead, but made some mistakes that cost us," said Besecker. "We gave them too many easy baskets off of rebounds because we didn't box out. It doesn't take any special skill to box out."
After a timeout Covington responded with a lay-up by Angle and a pair of free throws by Otte to cut the margin to 36-32.
But that was as close as Covington would get as Bethel outscored the Lady Buccs 5-2 to take a 41-36 win.
"We have to learn how to win," Besecker closed. "We'll keep working to get better."
