JANUARY 17, 2008 – COVINGTON
It wasn't pretty, but the Covington Lady Buccs captured their second straight win with a 52-40 victory over rival Bradford, Thursday.

The victory improves Covington's record to 5-12 overall and 5-5 in the CCC, while Bradford drops to 2-14 and 1-9 in conference play.

"Defensively, we didn't play our best," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "At times we played well at the defensive end, but we weren't consistent. We'll have to correct that before Saturday."

Saturday, Covington has a significant test against Jackson Center.

"Bradford played a box-and-one on Renee (Otte) and they did a nice job," Besecker explained. "We can probably expect that from here on out. Teams will try to take Renee out of the game."

But Covington did receive a balanced scoring effort as six players scored and Shelby Hoblit matched Otte with a game-high 13 points.

"It's good to see that balance on offense," Besecker said. "We had some other kids step up and make some big shots and we'll need that down the line."

Freshman Kayla Fissel started strong for Covington with eight points in the first half, including two treys.

Meanwhile, Lady Buccs managed to hold Bradford to just two first quarter points, but the Lady Railroaders hung right with Covington in the second quarter to go into the half down 22-15.

Covington opened the second half on an 8-1 run to take a 30-16 lead, but Bradford battled its way back to close the gap to 36-28 at the end of the period.

Caitlin Goubeaux and Angel Yount each drilled treys, while Brittany Reed, Cassie Bishop and Goubeaux all scored on short jumpers.

"They (Bradford) got right back into the game after we got the big lead in the third," said Besecker. "We gave them a lot of open looks and to their credit they knocked down some big shots. We'll have to address that in practice."

A Marissa Wirrig lay-up to start the fourth period cut the Covington lead to six and had the Bradford crowd into the game. But the Lady Buccs responded with six straight points on jumpers by Alyssa Angle, Otte and Hoblit.

After a three-point play by Ali Dross, Halley Roberts canned a jumper. But Cassie Bishop drove to the basket for another three-point play to make the score 44-36.

But Covington went on an 8-0 run to seal the contest, although Bradford responded with a trey by Brittany Reed and a free throw by Alaina Swabb to make the final score 52-40.

To go along with the 13 points each from Otte and Hoblit, Covington received eight points each from Fissel and Haley Roberts.

Bradford was led by Goubeax with 10 points and Cassie Bishop with 8 points, while Angel Yount and Brittany Reed each dropped in 7 points.
