December 20, 2007 CASSTOWN
A week ago the Covington Lady Buccs put together their finest performance in a loss to Russia and was looking for a similar effort Thursday. Covington would need it as unbeaten Miami East was on the other end of the floor.
"We knew we'd have to play well to have a chance in this game," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "They (Miami East) are quick and athletic. Plus, they have some size as well."
Covington received an outstanding effort from Renee Otte, who led all players with 22 points. But the Lady Buccs only received five points from the remaining players on the roster.
The result was a 49-27 defeat.
"The kids have to challenge themselves to get better at the offensive end," Besecker said. "We need other kids to step up. The season is halfway over and we're still looking for someone other than Renee to step up. It's a lack of confidence."
Miami East didn't have a confidence problem as eight players scored in the contest. Katie Mengos led the Lady Vikings with 16 points.
"Mengos is a nice player," Besecker said. "She's quick and aggressive at both ends of the floor."
The unbeaten Vikings started the game ice cold as they failed to score a field goal in the first five minutes of the contest.
But Miami East quickly turned its game up a notch to take a 10-4 lead at the end of the quarter and a 26-10 at the half.
"We had a hard time handling their trap," Besecker said. "We have to be stronger and smarter with the basketball."
Covington played right with Miami East in the third quarter as both teams scored nine points in the stanza.
But the Lady Vikings opened the fourth quarter with eight straight points to take a 43-19 lead.
Otte closed out the contest by scoring Covington's final eight points, including two three-pointers.
"Defensively we played pretty well," said Besecker. "We had a lot of turnovers that led to points for them. Much of that has to due with how good their defense is, but a lot has to do with us not being able to take care of the basketball."
The loss drops Covington to 1-9 on the season and 1-4 in the CCC.
Miami East improves to 11-0 and 6-0 in conference action.
