November 17, 2007 – COVINGTON
The learning experience for the Covington Lady Buccs basketball team continued Saturday night as Fairlawn spoiled the home opener, 50-24.

The loss didn't disappoint Buccaneer coach Chris Besecker as much as the failure to learn from mistakes made on the floor.

"We should have played better than this," Besecker said. "They (Fairlawn) basically did two things on offense and we didn't stop it. They ran a simple back-screen play and we knew it was coming beforehand. We just weren't getting into position to stop it."

Fairlawn opened the contest by scoring the first 12 points and held Covington to a single basket in the first quarter. That came on a stick-back by Alyssa Angle with just 16 seconds remaining in the stanza.

"Offensively, we're not creating good shots," Besecker explained. "When we do get a shot off, we're not knocking them down."

Covington outscored Fairlawn 6-3 in the fist two minutes of the second period as Shelby Hoblit hit on a pair of short jumpers and Renee Otte connected on a stick-back.

But Fairlawn captured the momentum back with a 6-2 run to close out the half with a 21-10 lead.

Fairlawn continued to roll in the second half as it opened with two straight lay-ups to force a Covington timeout.

Shortly thereafter Jessica Prince scored on four straight back-door cuts to the basket to make the score 33-15.

Alyssa Angle hit on a jumper and Renee Otte connected on a free throw for Covington, but Amanda Francis responded with a lay-up to make the score 35-18 with one quarter to play.

The Lady Buccs opened the final frame on a 6-2 run and a pair of baskets by Shelby Hoblit and Kayla Fissel and two free throws by Otte.

But Fairlawn closed out the contest the way it started by scoring the final 13 points for a 50-24 win.

"It's tough to play on back-to-back nights when you're inexperienced and don't have a lot of depth," said Besecker. "But we'll get better. There's a lot of on-the-job training going on right now."

Covington drops to 0-2 on the young season and travels to rival Newton on Tuesday to begin Cross County Conference play.
