JANUARY 24, 2008 – PITSBURG
Thursday's 63-25 loss at Franklin Monroe was one Covington coach Chris Besecker would like his team to forget for now, but keep in the back of their minds for the future.

That's because the Lady Buccs lost their competitive edge early and couldn't get it back as the game wore on.

"It was discouraging because our will to compete went away when things didn't go our way early," Besecker said. "That's not typical of these kids. We want to put this performance behind us for now, but we'll remember this down the line."

What Besecker prefers is his team focus on the opportunities that are ahead as a solid performance against Mississinawa Valley next Thursday will give Covington some momentum heading into the tournament.

"We've got a chance to finish .500 in our conference with a win over Mississinawa," Besecker explained. "Our focus is to get back on the winning track for the tournament."

After a 6-0 run by Franklin Monroe to start the contest, Covington was able to cut the lead to 8-6 midway through the first.

Renee Otte scored on two jumpers and a pair of free throws, while Kayla Fissel scored on a lay-up in transition.

But Franklin Monroe went on a 9-0 run to push the lead to 17-6 before a Fissel trey with three seconds left in the frame.

"They (Franklin Monroe) had two solid post players and kids that can shoot from the perimeter," Besecker stated. "We didn't match up with them very well and our frustration got the best of us."

Covington's frustration hit a boiling point over the remainder of the first half and throughout the third period as Franklin Monroe pulled away.

The Lady Buccs could only manage two field goals and three free throws as Franklin Monroe outscored Covington 36-8 in the second and third quarters combined.

"We didn't shoot well at all," said Besecker. "We had some nice looks, but didn't finish."

Another reason for Franklin Monroe's 53-17 lead after three quarters of play was Covington's inability to take care of the basketball.

"We had too many turnovers," Besecker continued. "We'd turn the ball over and they'd get a lay-up. We just didn't do a good job of taking care of the basketball."

Covington had better offensive success in the fourth quarter with eight points, but still struggled on the defensive end. Franklin Monroe scored 10 points in the frame to take a convincing 63-25 win.

"We had some individual breakdowns defensively," Besecker commented. "A lot of that was out of frustration."

Renee Otte led Covington with nine points, while Kayla Fissel accounted for eight points.

The loss drops Covington to 5-14 overall and 5-6 in Cross County Conference play.
