November 16, 2007 - HOUSTON
Coming into the season everyone knew the Covington Lady Buccs would be young and inexperienced. That showed Friday night in the season opener as Houston jumped out to a 20-2 first quarter lead and cruised to a 51-27 victory.

"Our youth an inexperienced showed tonight," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "We have a learning curve on both ends of the floor. Couple that with with the hight disadvantage we'll face every night, it's an uphill battle."

After Renee Otte broke a scoreless streak by both teams with a jumper with 2:24 off the clock, Houston torched the nets for 20 straight points in 5:36.

Seven of those points came from Danielle Monnier, who had led all scorers with 11 points at the break.

"That first quarter was pretty ugly," Besecker described. "We were not very patient running our own offense and our transition defense was poor."

But Covington was able to stay right with Houston the rest of the way and had a productive second period.

Renee Otte started the stanza with a lay-up and Alyssa Angle followed with a three-pointer to give Covington some momentum.

Otte managed to get to the free throw line for eight attempts in the period, converting on six shots to lead Covington with 10 first half points.

"I'm pleased with the effort the kids gave," Besecker said. "We played hard and that's a carry over from last year. We can build that."

In spite of the effort Covington couldn't contain Houston's Kimmie Repogle in the third period. Repogle repeatedly beat Covington defenders to the basket for 10 of her game-high 16 points in the frame.

Houston was able to extend its lead to 39-18 before a Shelby Hoblit basket and a free throw by Katie Dickey made the score 39-21 with one quarter to play.

Heidi Taviano connected on a short jumper to start the fourth, but Hoblit responded with a short jumper of her own for Covington.

Another basket by Taviano followed by a runner by Repogle increased the Houston lead to 45-23.

Renee Otte converted a steal into a lay-up and later hit on one of two free throws to give her a team-high 13 points and cut the margin to 45-26.

But Houston outscored Covington 6-1 over the remainder of the contest to take the 51-27 win.

"We've got some work to do, but we'll get better," Besecker concluded. "As coaches we have to be patient and develop the kids. We have to continue to hit the weight room and work on our conditioning. As long as we do that and continue to play hard, we'll improve as we get more experience."

Covington hosts Fairlawn Saturday in another out of conference contest.
