JANUARY 24, 2008 COVINGTON
Covington has a rich tradition of success in girls basketball and a group of fifth and sixth graders are the next generation to make their own mark on the program.
But first, the youngsters must learn the basic fundamentals of the game before they can excel on the hardwood. It's a process every successful player who has come through Covington High School has had to go through.
Thanks to the intramural program, instructed by Marti Cain who has an extensive athletic background in basketball and volleyball, the fifth and sixth graders got a head start in learning the game of basketball.
The intramural program consisted of 90-minute practices held on Monday, Thursday and Saturday through the months of December and January. The practices were not only held in the middle school gymnasium, but on the same high school floor where many great moments have taken place in Covington girls basketball.
Fifteen fifth graders and nine sixth graders regularly attended, while additional instruction was provided by some of the current high school players, including Shelby Hoblit, Brittany Arnett, Alyssa Angle, Kayla Fissel, Renee Otte, Katie Dickey, Halley Roberts, Carrie Spurgeon and Carole Bayse.
The girls learned valuable skills they can practice either with a group or on their own, such as handling the ball with both hands, right and left handed lay-ups, shooting jump shots and free throws, and rebounding. Other skills learned were through one-on-one match-ups, three-on-three competitions and five-on-five contests.
Mrs. Cain was pleased with the improvement the girls showed throughout the intramural program and hopes they continue to work on developing the skills they learned.
"The girls really worked hard and had lots of fun," she said. "This (the intramural program) is designed to give them a solid foundation. Now it's up to the girls to take what they've learned, practice on their own or with their friends and build on this experience."
Should the girls do that, they'll no doubt contribute to the future success of the Lady Buccs' basketball program.
