JANUARY 19, 2008 – COVINGTON
Covington went into Saturday's contest with Jackson Center fully expecting a physical contest and the Lady Buccs managed to use it to their advantage for three quarters.

But the wear and tear took its toll down the stretch as Covington couldn't hold on in the fourth quarter, losing 25-21.

"Their (Jackson Center) brand of basketball is physical and we knew that," Covington coach Chris Besecker said. "They run seven to eight kids and like to wear teams down."

In attempt to keep his team as fresh as possible, Besecker applied a zone defense - a strategy that appeared to be working as Covington held an 18-16 lead into the final frame.

"We haven't played a zone the past few games, but the kids did a pretty good job," said Besecker. "When you hold a team to 25 points, you expect to win. It's frustrating we couldn't score more."

Jackson Center's aggression gave Covington 13 attempts from the free throw line in the first half. The Lady Buccs connected on just six of those, but still held a 12-10 lead at the half.

"We had a good shot at getting some separation in the first half," Besecker explained. "But we didn't take advantage at the free throw line."

Covington's other six points in the first half came on three baskets by Renee Otte on three straight possessions after the Lady Buccs were held without a field goal until 4:23 was left in the second period.

"Our issue offensively was we couldn't make the first pass," Besecker said. "When we did get into our offense, we'd throw the ball away. We turned the ball over as much as we shot it."

Still, Covington was solid defensively, which kept the Lady Buccs on top throughout much of the third period and into the early moments of the fourth quarter.

But defensive lapses on three Jackson Center possessions allowed the visiting Tigers to go on a 6-0 run to take a 22-18 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

"We started wearing down in the fourth quarter," Besecker said. "They got some big offensive rebounds that led to some second and third shot opportunities."

Covington scored its first point of the final frame with 2:20 left on a Renee Otte free throw and didn't score a fourth quarter field goal until eight seconds were left in the game. That came on a stick back by Shelby Hoblit that cut the Jackson Center lead to 23-21.

Forced to foul, Covington sent Jackson Center's Miranda Doseck to the free throw line in the double bonus.

Doseck connected on both attempts to seal Covington's fate, 25-21.

"We got after it defensively," Besecker described. "But their depth wore us down in the fourth quarter and we weren't consistent on each possession. This is one we should have had."

Renee Otte led Covington with 13 points, ten of those coming in the first half.

Jackson Center received a game-high 14 points from senior Miranda Doseck.

Covington was nine of 17 from the charity stripe, while Jackson Center knocked down just five of 11 free throw attempts.

The Lady Buccs (5-13) looked to rebound next Thursday at Franklin Monroe.
