December 1, 2007 - COVINGTON
The Covington Lady Buccs couldn't solve the puzzle when it came to containing Lehman's high-powered offense and trio of Sarah Freytag, Jessica Slagle and Brooke Vanover on Saturday at Covington High School.
The talented trio accounted for 39 of Lehman's 48 first half points and 51 of the teams' 74 points for the game.
"They (Freytag, Slagle and Vanover) pretty much did what they wanted in the first half," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "We didn't help ourselves at all defensively. We didn't move our feet very well at all."
Freytag ended up with a game-high 20 points, while Slagle and Vanover contributed with 18 and 13 respectively.
"We knew coming in that those three did the bulk of their scoring," Besecker continued. "Two of those kids are headed to Division 1 colleges, so we knew had our hands full. Still, we should have defended better."
Lehman scored at will in the first half and led 26-8 at the end of one and 48-16 at the half.
The Cavalier defense was also dominant in the first half as it applied a full-court press Covington had trouble breaking.
"When you play against a good team like that they'll expose all of your weakness," Besecker explained.
Even with the constant rotation of players by Lehman in the second half, the Lady Buccs still had problems getting anything going offensively.
Covington managed just three field goals and ten second half points. Much of that was due to the consistent pressure applied by the Lehman defenders.
The end result was a 74-26 defeat for Covington.
"We have to look at this (the game) as a good learning experience," Besecker said. "We saw a lot of things to improve on. We'll get in the gym on Monday and get to work on correcting the mistakes we made."
The loss drops Covington's record to 1-5 on the season. The Lady Buccs look to rebound on Thursday at Ansonia.
