JANUARY 31, 2008 COVINGTON
The Covington Lady Buccs concluded the regular season with a hard-fought 33-25 victory over Mississinawa Valley, Thursday.
Covington heads into the tournament with a 6-14 overall record and 6-6 in the Cross County Conference.
"It was good to end the regular season with a win and go into the tournament on a positive note," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "It's also good for us to even up our record in the conference."
Capturing a win wasn't easy for the Lady Buccs as Mississinawa's Cierra Saintignon was a handful to defend.
Saintignon finished the contest with 15 points and consistently hit big shots to keep the Lady 'Hawks in the game.
"She (Saintignon) is a player," praised Besecker. "Her dribble penetration gave us fits."
It also resulted in foul trouble for Covington's leading scorer and top defender Renee Otte.
"Renee got into some foul trouble and we had to make some adjustments," Besecker continued. "We tried shortening the game by taking some time on each offensive possession."
Besecker also rotated Otte in on offense and pulled her out on defense to minimize the possibility of a fifth foul after Otte picked up her fourth foul with 20 seconds left in the third quarter.
When Otte wasn't on the floor, it was Halley Roberts who came in and gave the Lady Buccs key minutes.
"Haley came in and played very well," Besecker said. "Not only defensively, but she had a nice pass to Katie (Dickey) that resulted in a huge basket in the fourth quarter."
That came after Mississinawa had cut the margin to 21-20 at the end of the third period and Shelby Hoblit opened the fourth quarter with the free throw for Covington.
Roberts found Dickey between defenders for the open shot and Dickey connected to give Covington a four-point lead.
Moments later Otte increased the margin to six points on a runner. That was Covington's final basket of the night, but it would be all the Lady Buccs would need.
"We stayed strong in the end by making the plays we needed and hitting free throws down the stretch," Besecker said.
Covington put the game away at the free throw line as it made 8 of 11 in the fourth quarter and was 16 for 21 for the game. Meanwhile, Mississinawa Valley only attempted six free throws on the night and made just three.
"Free throw shooting was huge," said Besecker. "The kids took advantage when they got to the line."
Covington was also stellar at the defensive end, in spite of having trouble containing Saintignon.
"We mixed it up defensively," Besecker explained. "We played zone and man-to-man. We had some breakdowns when Saintegnon penetrated, but overall we played pretty well."
Even though the end result was a victory, Besecker knew his team would face a stiff challenge from the outset.
"I knew this game would be a tough one," said Besecker. "We are two evenly matched teams and when you have that it's going to come down to the wire. Fortunately we made the plays we needed to get us a win."
Renee Otte led Covington with 17 points, while freshman Kayla Fissel had a career-high 11 points. Nine of Fissel's points came on treys.
The Lady Buccs begin tournament play on Monday, February 11 at 6:00 pm against Arcanum at Brookville.
