November 20, 2007 PLEASANT HILL
It was the battle of Route 48 Tuesday night as the Covington Lady Buccs traveled to Newton High School to take on the Lady Indians in a Cross County Conference match-up.
It wasn't a work of art. But for a young Buccaneer team, they'll take a win any way they can get it.
"It's nice to get a 'W'," said Covington coach Chris Besecker after his team captured a 37-19 victory. "It wasn't pretty, but a win is a win."
It was an important win for Covington as it ended a two-game losing streak to start the season.
The Lady Buccs did it in typical Besecker fashion - defense.
"It told the kids that good solid defense will wear teams down," Besecker explained. "That's what we did in the second half tonight. That's typical of many of our wins in the past."
Newton jumped to an early 4-3 lead on a runner by Kaitie Stewart and a jumper by Keeley Booher. Covington's first points came on a trey by Alyssa Angle, who would go on to score a career-high 11 points on the night.
"Alyssa hit some big shots early that got us going," said Besecker.
Renee Otte followed Angle's trey with a three-pointer of her own to give Covington a 6-4 lead. It was a lead Covington would extend to 12-6 on two more baskets by Angle and a stick-back by Otte.
But Booher canned a three of her own to close the gap to 12-9 at the end of the first.
Neither team could get much going offensively in the second period as the score remained 12-9 until 4:19 was left on the clock. Shelby Hoblit broke the trend with a pair of free throws, while Otte scored both of Covington's field goals in the stanza.
Newton received a pair of baskets from Stewart to keep the game manageable for the Lady Indians at the half, 18-13.
"Our offense has to get better," Besecker said. "We turn the ball over way too much. Right now we're doing a lot of dribbling without a purpose and not handling the pressure very good."
Fortunately for Covington, it's defense was stellar in the second half - holding Newton to just six points.
Meanwhile, the Lady Bucc offense did just enough to score 19 second half points for the 18-point win.
Renee Otte led all players with 17 points to go along with Angle's 11 points.
Kaitie Stewart led Newton with six points, while Keeley Booher scored 5 points.
Covington converted on 4 of 7 attempts from the free throw line, while Newton was 0 for 2 from the charity stripe.
The Lady Buccs improve to 1-2, while Newton drops to 1-2.
