January 3, 2008 COVINGTON
The education process of the Covington Lady Buccs has been a work in progress for coach Chris Besecker.
After struggling through a 2-11 record and a brutal non-league schedule through the first half of the season, Besecker and his young team is starting to see the rewards of their hard work.
The biggest reward to date came Thursday as Covington knocked off Tri-County North, one of the upper echelon teams in the Cross County Conference, 44-34.
"My message to the kids has been our non-league schedule would prepare us for conference," said Besecker. "The teams we play outside of our league are pretty good and we have to play hard to be competitive. The effort we are accustom to giving paid off tonight."
It sure did as Covington outscored Tri-County North 26-9 after trailing 25-18 midway through the third period.
Playing with primarily six players, the Lady Buccs were the fresher team in the second half.
"Other than bringing in Halley Roberts to spell some of the girls, our starting five was on the floor most of the night," Besecker explained. "But we had the fresher legs because we are accustom to that."
Covington received a dominating effort from junior Renee Otte, who led all players with 30 points and came down with several key rebounds in the fourth quarter.
"What can you say about Renee?," Besecker asked. "Wow, she had a heck of a game. She came up big on both ends of the floor. Getting to the free throw line 20 times tells you a lot about her ability."
Much of Otte's success is due to her effort.
"Renee leaves it out on the floor," Besecker continued. "It all starts with her effort. She'll come in at half time and be completely out of breath. But she never stops."
Perhaps the most critical point in the game came after Tri-County North drilled a trey to cut a five-point Covington lead to 34-32 midway through the fourth quarter. Freshman Kayla Fissel responded with a trey of her own to push the lead back to five and spark a 10-2 run to close out the game.
"That was the play of the game," said Besecker. "Every play is big, but that one stands out. It was very important we respond after they (Tri-County North) hit that three. That was a big shot by Kayla."
A shot she may have passed up earlier in the year.
"She's getting confidence in taking shots like that," Besecker continued. "She's maturing and that comes with experience."
The victory is one that should give Covington confidence since it came against a quality team in the conference.
"They (Tri-County North) have a winning record and a lot of people have been talking about them finishing high in the league standings," Besecker said. "Yes, this is a big win for us."
Covington improves to 3-11 overall and 3-4 in the Cross County Conference, while Tri-County North drops to 6-5 and 4-4 in the league.
The Lady Buccs will look to keep the confidence and momentum going on Saturday at Twin Valley South.
