If you walk into a girls basketball practice at Covington high School you'll see the same Chris Besecker that you saw in the past - all business and full of zest for teaching the game of basketball.

Then, when you talk to him about the upcoming season, you get an idea of what gets him excited about coaching girls basketball.

It's obvious that it's much easier to win when you have experience and talent up and down the roster. But, the challenge a coach like Besecker loves is molding young, inexperienced players into solid players.

That's the challenge he faces this year and he's taking it head on.

"Yeah, we're obviously young," said Besecker while his team worked on free throw shooting. "But we have kids who want to play and that's what you need. We may not have any seniors, but the girls we do have work hard and want to learn."

The lone returning starter is junior Renee Otte. She made a name for herself as a shut-down defender last season before an unfortunate knee injury prevented her from playing in the Region Final against New Knoxville. But a healthy Otte gives Besecker the leadership he needs despite having no seniors in uniform.

Also returning are sophomores Alysaa Angle and Shelby Hoblit, who both saw varsity action last season off the bench. Both players are multi-sport athletes with excellent work ethic.

Stepping up from the junior varsity level are juniors Katie Dickey and Brittany Arnett, along with sophomores Halley Roberts, Erin Waterfall and Carole Bayse.

Completing the varsity line-up will be freshman Kayla Fissel.

As in years past, the Lady Buccs will be smaller than many of their opponents as the tallest players on the roster are 5'9" in Shelby Hoblit and Carole Bayse. So the Lady Buccs will succeed by doing what has become the foundation of the program over the years - playing fundamental basketball and solid defense.

"Basketball isn't always about who has the most athletic ability," Besecker explained. "Kids who do things right fundamentally like boxing out and playing solid defense can make up for some of those things."

The style of defense may change due to inexperience from a man defense to a zone, but the philosophy will be the same - force turnovers and get the ball into excellent scoring position at the other end.

It has been the remedy for success in the past and will continue throughout the upcoming season. Although success isn't always measured in wins and loses, it can be measured by how a team improves throughout the season.

Knowing the way Lady Bucc basketball has been played in the past, you can bet this years group will be a much improved group by season's end - and that means bigger and better things in years to come.
