December 13, 2007 - RUSSIA
Covington girls basketball coach Chris Besecker couldn't have been more pleased with the effort and performance his young team put forth in a 46-35 defeat to Russia, Thursday.

"This was by far our best game of the season," Besecker said. "We could have easily came in here and got blown out, but we played toe-to-toe with them for four quarters. We took a big step forward tonight."

It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out Russia had just about every advantage a team could ask for with experience, size and speed. It was those advantages that ultimately decided the game, but it didn't come easy.

"They (Russia) just have a lot of good weapons," Besecker said in praise of the Lady Raiders. "And it all starts out front with (Hillary) Monnin. When you have a four-year starter at the point, you've really got something. She's a great player."

Monnin displayed her greatness as she scored a game-high 23 points, 14 coming in the second half.

"She (Monnin) just hurst you in so many ways, offensively, defensively and handling the basketball," Besecker said.

But it was the Lady Buccs' efforts in containing Russia's two inside players that kept Covington in the game throughout. Much of that was due to a solid defensive effort by Shelby Hoblit.

"If you would have told me that Hoblit would have had more points than both the Petty sisters (Sarah and Katie), I would have had a hard time believing it," said Besecker. "But we knew we had to defend well inside and we did."

Much of that was due to the hustle Covington gave at both ends of the floor.

"Spencer (Cordonnier) even told me after the game we out hustled them," Besecker said of his conversation with the Russia head coach. "That's a credit to the kids because I asked them before the game to leave everything out on the floor tonight. And they did that."

To go along with Monnin's 23 points, Rene Homan sparked Russia with eight of her 10 points in the second half.

Covington was led by Renee Otte with 13 points and Shelby Hoblit with eight.

The Lady Buccs drop to 1-8 overall and will be back in action next Thursday on the road against Miami East.
