November 24, 2007 – VERSAILLES
Even with the most experienced teams Covington coach Chris Besecker and his Lady Buccs have had their hands full with Versailles over the years.

So when Besecker took a team without a single senior to Versailles on Saturday, he knew it would be a tough match-up for his young team.

"Going into the game I wasn't even concerned with the scoreboard," said Besecker after his team fell by the score of 59-34. "We went in looking to improve in all areas. It was a good game for us because Versailles made us execute to have any success at all."

Besecker got what he wanted as his team was able to score 34 points in the final three quarters after falling behind 22-0 at the end of one.

"We had a poor start, but our offensive execution got better as the game went on," Besecker continued. "We executed some nice lob passes inside that we were able to finish."

The poor start Besecker was referring too had much to do with the talent Versailles put on the floor, which included senior 6'1" forward Justine Raterman and senior guard Emily Bohman. The duo combined for 30 points in one half of play, including 18 of the Lady Tiger's 22 points in the first quarter.

"Thank God those two are seniors," Besecker said with a chuckle. "I'm thrilled we won't have to face them again. They are unbelievable players."

Shutting down Raterman and Bohman was impossible task, but Besecker applied a strategy in hopes of slowing them down.

"We played a zone (defense) the entire night," he described. "There was no way we were going to match up with them man-to-man. They still hurt us with their ability, but we were able to make it tough at times for them to get easy shots off."

Raterman and Bohman weren't the only two players to have success for the Lady Tigers. The entire Versailles roster saw the floor and nine of the eleven players contributed points in the contest as coach Jacki Stonebraker kept fresh legs in the game.

Still, Covington managed to hang with Versailles in the second half - scoring 22 points to the Lady Tiger's 24 points.

"I'm pleased with our effort," Besecker said. "They (Versailles) are probably the best team we'll face on our schedule. We never got down on ourselves and kept playing hard."

Raterman led all players with 16 points, while Bohman also reached double figures with 14 points.

Covington was led by Shelby Holblit with 14 points and Renee Otte with 12 points.

The Lady Buccs drop to 1-3 and will look to get back on the winning track on Thursday at home against Tri-Village.
