FEBRUARY 2, 2009 - COVINGTON
The Covington Lady Buccs deserved a better fate Monday night than to see an outstanding effort result in a one-point loss to Arcanum - thanks to an Angie Cates three-pointer with 22 seconds left that banked in off the backboard.
"We didn't get the breaks we needed tonight," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "They (Arcanum) made five three-pointers in the fourth quarter and two of those banked in."
Still, Covington had its chance for a game-winning shot of its own in the final 20 seconds.
"We had two good looks at the basket in that final possession, but the ball wouldn't drop for us," Besecker described. "By the time we got the third shot off time ran out."
Which left the Covington team dejected as the Arcanum contengient celebrated.
"The girls are disappointed, but I couldn't be more proud of this team," Besecker said. "The kids hustled their butts off tonight and played some good basketball."
Covington opened the contest with an 11-4 run on baskets a pair of baskets by Shelby Kihm, two from Alyssa Angle and Katie Dickey and a combined three free throws from Kihm and Julianna Simon.
But Kihm was forced to the bench with her second foul, which led to a 20-4 run by Arcanum over the remainder of the half.
"That run hurt," said Besecker. "They were able to get some offensive boards and turn it into points. Plus, we made some mistakes with turnovers that really hurt."
But Kihm returned to the floor in the third quarter and sparked Covington's best frame of the season, scoring six points - but more importantly, controlling the boards.
"When Shelby was out it seemed like they were getting every rebound," Besecker explained.
Another freshman, Julianna Simon also had a big third period with 11 of her 17 points in the contest.
"For us to put up 21 points in the third was outstanding," Besecker said. "And 17 of those 21 points came from two of our freshman. That was huge."
Meanwhile, the Lady Bucc "D" was stellar in holding Arcanum to just three field goals and a free throw in the frame, which resulted in a 36-31 Covington lead with one quarter to go.
"I was pretty animated at halftime because I knew we were good enough to compete with them (Arcanum)," said Besecker. "The girls responded in the second half."
Arcanum opened the final frame with a trey by Cates and hit another trey after a Shelby Kihm stick-back to make the score 38-37.
Sophomore Carrie Spurgeon then connected on a jumper and Julianna Simon made three of four free throws on back-to-back possessions to push the Covington advantage to 43-37.
But Arcanum went on a 7-1 run to tie the score at 44-44 until an Alyssa Angle trey put Covington back on top 47-44 with 3:38 left in the contest.
Cates responded with her second trey of the quarter to tie the score again, but Spurgeon followed with a three-pointer of her own to push the lead back to three.
Halley Roberts increased the margin to four by connecting on one of two free throws, but another Arcanum trey made the score a one possession game, 51-50.
Angle then made the second of two free throw attempts to push the lead to two points, but Cates drilled the dagger on Arcanum's next possession, her third trey of the quarter.
"Before the game we talked about earning some respect and I think we did that tonight," said Besecker, despite the loss. "It still hurts (to lose) because we left some points on the floor."
Those points Besecker was referring to was at the free throw line, where Covington made just six of 11 in the fourth quarter and 10 for 19 in the contest.
"We needed to shoot better at the free throw line," he continued. "Especially in the fourth quarter when the game was on the line. We make one or two more of those free throws, it's a different story."
Still, Besecker is thrilled with the improvement his young team is showing as the season progresses.
"I'm excited about the way we are playing right now," said Besecker. "As long as we take things one game at a time and work on correcting our mistakes, we'll continue to improve. We'll get back to work and get ready for Bradford on Thursday."
