December 27, 2008 – BRANDT
The Covington Lady Buccs played right with Bethel on Saturday, but couldn't get over the hump for victory number two as Bethel held on for a 41-34 win.

The loss drops Covington to 1-8 on the season and 1-4 in the Cross County Conference.

Covington opened an early 4-2 lead on lay-ups by Renee Otte and Julliana Simon, but Bethel went on a 9-2 run to close out the opening frame as the Lady Buccs could only manage a jumper by Shelby Kihm.

Neither team could find much offense in the second quarter as each team flexed their muscles at the defensive end.

Kihm started the second with a jumper, but that was the lone field goal Covington would score in stanza. The only other points came from the free throw line as Simon and Otte each hit on one of two attempts.

Still, the Lady Buccs were right in the thick of things - trailing 14-10 at the break.

After a Kylie Kopp basket opened the second half, Kilhm found the bottom of the net of a baseline jumper and went to the line for the three-point play to cut the margin to 16-13.

Kopp followed with a three-point play of her own and another Bethel basket pushed the lead to eight, 21-13.

Halley Roberts connected on a jumper and the Lady Buccs would receive four more baskets in the third for a 13-point period.

But Bethel did a little better with a 16-point period to push the lead to 30-23 with one quarter to play.

Otte started off the final frame with a short runner, but found herself in foul trouble with her fourth foul on the inbounds pass.

The Lady Buccs could only convert on more field goal the rest of the way - an Alyssa Angle jumper - and had to settle for seven of ten free throws down the stretch.

It wasn't enough as Bethel kept it's seven-point cushion on the scoreboard for the 41-34 win.

Kihm and Angle led Covington with nine points each, while Renee Otte chipped in with seven points.

The Lady Buccs look to catch the ever elusive second win as they open a new year at home against New Bremen on January 3rd.
