FEBRUARY 5, 2009 - BRADFORD
The Covington Lady Buccs captured their third win of the season on Thursday, but it didn't come easy against a Bradford team with one win coming into the contest.
Bradford stayed right with Covington throughout and the Lady Buccs needed a trey by Alyssa Angle and a free throw by Halley Roberts in the final 1:16 to escape with a 36-32 win.
"It was kind of ugly and we didn't play as well as I would have liked," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "We were standing around flat footed at the defensive end, which is something we haven't done in awhile."
With the game tied 32-32 in the waning moments of the game, Covington needed a spark to prevent a shocking defeat.
Junior, Alyssa Angle stepped up as a leader by drilling her third trey for the game with 1:16 left on the clock to give Covington a 35-32 lead.
Bradford turned the ball over on its next possession, giving Covington a chance to seal the game at the free throw line as the Lady Railroaders were forced to foul.
But Covington missed on the front end of a one-and-one to give the home team new life.
Looking to chip into the three-point lead, Bradford was off the mark on a shot attempt and Covington's Halley Roberts battled for the rebound.
Roberts was fouled and made the front end of a one-and-one to finally seal the victory.
"Angle and Roberts stepped up in the fourth quarter," Besecker said. "They both hits some big shots and we needed them. And Halley, she makes a lot of hustle plays and for her to come down with the rebound at the end was huge."
It was huge because Covington couldn't shake Bradford at any time in the contest. The Railroaders were celebrating "Senior Night" and the excitement of the evening carried over into the game as both school had large student sections.
Covington led just 11-9 after one, but managed to increase the margin to 20-13 at the half.
Neither team could get much going offensively in the third as they combined for a total of ten points in the frame to make the score 24-19 in Covington's favor.
Bradford roared back in the final stanza to outscore Covington 13-8 and tie the score at 32-32 with under 2:00 to go.
But Alyssa Angle and Halley Roberts willed Covington to victory with their last minute heroics.
"We got a road win on their Senior Night, so that's a big plus," said Besecker. "Another good thing is the kids are starting to take shots without thinking so much - Alyssa Angle in particular. When she was open she took the shot without hesitating. That's good to see."
Hopefully it carries over to Monday when Covington travels to face National Trail.
