A Look At The Future?
Miami East showcased the level of basketball a young Lady Bucc team could be playing themselves in the near future - if they take the experience and work to reach that level.

JANUARY 26, 2009 - COVINGTON
It wasn't long ago when the Covington Lady Buccs were playing the same caliber of basketball that the current Miami East team is enjoying.

As a matter of fact, it was just two years ago when Covington recorded it's fourth straight 20-win season and made it all the way to the Regional Semifinal.

During that time Covington was beating young, inexperienced teams by the same type of score Miami East beat Covington on Monday, 63-18.

"We've been where Miami East is," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "Now we're at the other end of the spectrum - a young team learning how to play the game."

Which makes for a frustrating evening when you are playing a team that has aspirations of challenging some of the top teams in the state.

"Our thing is when we play teams the caliber of East, it brings out all of our weaknesses," Besecker explained. "We're not very strong right now and a lot of that is due to how young we are. We're not aggressive with the basketball and a lot of that is due to inexperience and maybe being unsure of ourselves."

But, regardless of the score, the experience of playing a team like Miami East was a positive one as the youngsters on the roster saw first hand what an all-around solid basketball team looks like.

"This was an eye opener for our younger kids," said Besecker. "Our freshman have been forced into playing varsity due to the injuries we've had and that's not at all a bad thing. They got to see what that level (what East plays) is all about."

It was obvious early that the visiting team was at another level as it built an 18-2 lead in the opening frame and then led 30-12 at the break.

Covington could only manage two more points in the third as the Viking lead expanded to 54-14.

But there was no quit in Covington despite being outscored 9-4 in the final frame. The team played hard until a Carrie Spurgeon trey closed out the scoring in the final seconds.

"The kids did play hard, but they (Miami East) are just a stronger, quicker, more experienced team," Besecker reflected. "And, we were not very aggressive with the basketball. When you don't attempt to drive to the basket you are easy to defend for a team like East. I called a timeout with 2:00 to go to remind the girls of that very thing."

And the girls got the point as evident by two straight offensive possessions to close out the contest.

"We're learning because after the timeout we go out and get two good possessions right away," continued Besecker. "Those are the things I'm looking for each game is how the kids respond to what we are teaching. We can build on things like that."

With five games left before the start of the sectional tournament, the Lady Buccs will continue to work to make strides.

"We'll keep pushing ourselves to get better," Besecker closed. "We'll continue to focus on the things we need to work on so the next time we play a team of Miami East's caliber the scoreboard doesn't look the same."

And that's how you take an experience like the one the Lady Buccs had Monday night and ultimately turn your program around to the level it once was - just two years ago.
