FEBRUARY 12, 2009 - COVINGTON
Katie Dickey and Renee Otte have meant so much to the girls basketball program over the past four years that it wasn't fair for them to suffer through the adversity they've had to face in their senior seasons. After all, they are the only two remaining from a junior high team that won the conference championship four years ago as eighth graders.

"Give those two girls credit for what they've done over the past four years," said Covington coach Chris Besecker after the Lady Buccs fell to Franklin Monroe 46-37 in the home finale. "They've been in the gym for a long time."

Otte, who lettered in each season since her freshman year, has saw her senior season cut short due to injuries.

"It's a shame for Renee to have had the health problems she'd had this year," Besecker said. "What she's went through this year has been tough on her. Going into the season we were looking forward to her picking up at where she left off last year and having an even bigger year this year. Unfortunately she was never healthy. But she's been a special player for this program."

Dickey, despite the loss in her final home game, played perhaps one of her best defensive games of her career. And the fact that defense has been the staple of Lady Bucc basketball, Dickey's performance didn't go unnoticed by her coach.

"Katie played well defensively," said Besecker. "She didn't give up many points and she did a great job of creating turnovers. Katie's really gotten after it as of late."

As well as Dickey played defensively, it wasn't enough to overcome a sluggish effort of the team as Franklin Monroe consistently beat the Lady Buccs to loose balls and rebounds.

"Collectively, it was a disappointing effort," said Besecker. "We played on our heals instead of on our toes. The smallest player on the floor was getting rebounds on us. As a team, we just didn't get after it tonight."

Covington lead 9-7 after one, but surrendered a big second quarter in which Franklin Monroe scored 16 points and built a 23-18 lead at the break.

The Franklin Monroe lead increased to seven points at the end of the third and Covington couldn't close the gap in the final quarter despite being in the bonus for much of the frame.

"We didn't take care of the basketball very well tonight," Besecker pointed as to one of the primary reasons the Lady Buccs couldn't chip into Franklin Monroe's lead. "We knew going in that they would attack us with pressure, but we had a lot of uncontested turnovers. Those are the ones that hurt."

The defeat drops Covington to 3-17 on the season as it prepares for the sectional tournament.

"The good thing is we have two weeks before the tournament," said Besecker. "That's two weeks to get healthy and get our heads together."

Which will be done in practice.

"We'll get the kids playing more competitively in practice, even if we have to go three-on-three," he continued. "We'll get the kids ready to go."
