COVINGTON — The Buccaneers had a tough go of it in their home opener, losing to non-league foe Houston 39-18 Friday night.

Renee Otte led the way for the Buccaneers with seven points and Shelby Kihm had six — scoring all of the Buccaneers points in the first half. It also marked all of their points in the game.

Houston led 8-5 at the end of the first quarter and 20-13 at the halftime. The Houston defense tightened up in the third quarter and the Wildcats raced to a 31-13 lead with eight minutes to play.

"We kept it close in the first half, but couldn't buy a basket in the third quarter," Covington coach Chris Besecker said. "We had some open looks that went in and out."

Kimmie Repogle scored 18 points and Jaclyn Willoughby scored 12 for Houston.

“We struggled on the offensive end, but we kind of knew that was going to happen,” Besecker said. “We are young and we had some first-game jitters. We are going to get better, though. We have three freshmen out there. They are going to get better.”

Covington, now 0-1, will travel to Fairlawn tonight.
