DECEMBER 16, 2008 - SIDNEY
The Covington Lady Buccs continue to struggle offensively early in basketball games and it cost them once again in a 43-30 loss to Lehman on Tuesday.

"We made mental mistakes right out of the gate and it prevented us from getting going offensively," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "Julianna (Simon) also got banged pretty good in the knee and she had to come out. It wasn't the start we needed."

Combine the bad karma with the press of Lehman and the result was a 12-1 deficit after the opening frame.

"We handled the press better tonight than we have," Besecker said. "The problem was not putting the ball in the basket. We missed a lot of scoring opportunities."

Lehman went on to extend the lead to 20-8 at the half, but Julianna Simon caught fire in the third quarter with three treys.

And suddenly Covington was within three points of the Cavaliers.

"We had a nice run there and cut the lead to three, but we turn around and have some lapses on defense and they hit four straight treys to take the lead back to double digits," Besecker said.

Covington came right back by scoring the first seven points of the fourth quarter in an attempt to close the gap.

But Lehman took the air out of the ball to take advantage of the clock and preserve the 13-point victory.

The Lady Buccs struggled once again from the free throw line, making just 5 of 14 attempts for a meager 36%.

"Our free throw shooting has been horrendous," said Besecker. "We're only shooting 38% as a team and that's not good."

But there were some positives as the Lady Buccs did show signs of improvement at the defensive end.

"We had some great defensive possessions tonight," Besecker stated. "Unfortunately we gave them too many second and third shots."

The loss drops Covington to 1-5 on the season and a long road trip to Tri-Village on Thursday awaits.
