JANUARY 3, 2009 - COVINGTON
When you are 1-9 and had just suffered a 50-22 loss, sometimes it's hard to find something positive that you can build on for the second half of the season.

But for the Covington Lady Buccs, there are plenty of positives despite falling to an 8-1 New Bremen team on Saturday.

One...would be the on-the-job training the younger kids are receiving against a schedule full of quality programs.

Second...would be the drastic improvement of a junior varsity squad that won just one of 20 games a year ago and are now 8-2.

Third...would be the effort the kids give despite the frustrating defeats and injuries suffered to key performers of a year ago.

"We are getting better," said Covington coach Chris Besecker after his team was outgunned by a more experienced New Bremen team. "We are learning on the job, so to speak. Our goal for the remainder of the season is to continue to improve and be ready to challenge some teams in the tournament."

It has been done before, most notably last season when the Lady Buccs overcame a 1-10 start to finish 6-14 in the regular season and then knocked off two more teams in the tournament.

At 1-9, Covington is looking for similar results. But the cast of characters are different as Shelby Hoblit is out for the season and Renee Otte has been slowed by nagging injuries.

"Right now we don't really have anyone who can do some damage with dribble penetration," Besecker explained. "Renee's been banged up since day one and she's done all she can to gut it out. We're still trying to find ways to get the ball in the basket on the offensive end."

Not being able to put the ball in the basket was Covington's downfall against the Cardinals as the Lady Buccs only managed 8 first half points and 22 for the game.

Defensively, Covington kept the game manageable at the half - trailing 20-8. But a 30-point onslaught in the second half blew the game open.

"We were standing a little too much in the second half, so I switch from a zone to a man-to-man," Besecker said. "Plus, we got pounded on the boards. They had 13 offensive rebounds."

Still, the effort was there throughout the contest, which is something the Lady Buccs have been known for in Besecker's tenure on the bench.

And, the junior varsity kids are making significant strides.

"Last year they beat us 61-9 in the JV game," smiled Besecker after the junior varsity team captured a 31-27 win. "Our younger kids are really improving."

Two of the younger kids who have made significant improvements since last season are sophomores Carrie Spurgeon and Chloe Shell.

"Carrie and Chloe have improved greatly," Besecker praised. "When they take the floor, they go hard all the time. Plus, they'll do anything the coaches ask of them."

For instance, in today's JV game against New Bremen, a 5'4" Chloe Shell was asked to go into the post and battle with the bigger kids. Without a second thought, she did what she was told and made some plays against kids much bigger than herself.

"That's the kind of kid she is," described Besecker. "She'll do anything you ask. Whether it's move down to the post and take on girls a foot taller or take the wing and shoot the three - it doesn't matter to her. She'll do anything you ask."

With a talented freshman class on the roster, the way Shell and Spurgeon go about their business is about to carry over.

"What it does is It creates a competitive atmosphere at practice," Besecker continued. "The kids have to compete (for game action)."

Which will only help in the long run as the schedule ahead doesn't get any easier with Milton, Miami East and Russia in the immediate future.

"We have a lot of tough games left on our schedule," said Besecker. "There's no easy games for us, so we'll have to continue to improve and take things one game at a time."

And hopefully it will lead to some memorable moments in the second half of the season.
