DECEMBER 11, 2009 - COVINGTON
When you are losers of four straight games to start the season you'll take a win any way you can get it - even if it's not pretty.

So after Covington came back from a 22-16 deficit at the end of the third period to go on an 11-0 run in the final frame for a 27-22 victory, Buccaneer coach Chris Besecker breathed a sigh of relief.

"It sure is nice to get the 'W'," Besecker said. "It wasn't pretty at all, but we'll take it. We needed this win."

Newton gave Covington fits all night by implementing a 1-2-2 zone defense. This made it particularly difficult for Renee Otte to get any open looks at the basket.

Otte finished with just four points on the night, all coming in the final 1:48 of the contest. This, after being held to just one point last Saturday against Versailles.

"Teams will do that (focus on shutting down Otte)," Besecker explained. "They did a nice job of shutting down the dribble penetration in the middle. But we had plenty of shots. We just didn't knock them down."

Points were hard to come by for both teams, particularly in the first quarter as the first points didn't go on the board until a Shelby Kihm lay-in with 3:15 left in the opening frame.

Newton responded with a jumper by Marina Snipes and a lay-up by Keeley Booher to take a 4-2 lead after one.

The Lady Indians then erupted for 11 second period points and held Covington to a Julianna Simon trey, a Kilm jumper and a Simon free throw to take a 15-8 half time lead.

Alyssa Angle opened the second half with a three-pointer of her own, but Booher came right back for the Lady Indians with a lay-up.

Erin Waterfall scored her first points of the young season with a jumper from the baseline, but once again Newton responded with a basket by Snipes.

Simon brought Covington within three with her second trey of the game in the closing minute of the third, but for the third time in a row Newton matched Covington's effort with a Booher trey.

"I told the girls the only way we were going to have a chance to win was with our defense," said Besecker. "With the way we were shooting the ball, we had to rely on our defense to keep us in it and hopefully we could make enough shots in the end."

That's exactly what happened in the final frame as Covington held Newton without a single point the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, the offense started to click as Simon canned her third three-pointer to open the fourth and Kilm followed with a short jumper to cut the margin to 22-21.

After a Newton timeout, Waterfall hit on her second jumper of the second half to give Covington it's first lead since the opening basket of the game, 23-22 with 4:33 left to play.

All the while, Renee Otte sat on the bench catching a breather.

"We needed to give Renee a breather sometime," Besecker explained. "She was guarding (Katie) Stewart, who is their leading scorer and held her to two points. I wanted to give her a chance to catch her breathe and come back in and hopefully give us a spark down the stretch."

The strategy worked as Otte returned with fresh legs and sealed the deal with a jumper from the free throw line at the 1:48 mark and a pair of free throws in the final minute.

Simon led Covington with 10 points, while Newton was led by Keeley Booher with 10 points.

Covington improves to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the Cross County Conference.

The Lady Buccs travel to Lehman on Tuesday.
