JANUARY 13, 2009 - COVINGTON
The 40-15 score in a loss to Russia and a 1-11 overall record for the Covington Lady Buccs doesn't tell the entire story for a team learning on the fly.

The improvement is there just about every night.

The effort is there every night.

And the young team is gaining experience with every night.

"Those are the things we are looking at because, let's face it, we are in a rebuilding year right now," said Covington coach Chris Besecker of his team. "We lost Shelby (Hoblit) before the season and Renee (Otte) recently, so we're having to put a lot of freshman on the floor right now. But these kids haven't given up."

That was evident by Monday's practice and the effort on Tuesday.

"Here we are with one win and we have our best practice of the year on Monday," Besecker said. "That says a lot about these kids. They are challenging themselves by trying things they are not comfortable with - like driving to the basket."

And the effort carried over to Tuesday, although the score didn't show it.

Russia jumped out to an 11-0 lead before Shelby Kihm finally got Covington n the board with a stick back with 2:08 left in the opening frame.

"Shelby Kihm had her best game of the season," said Besecker. "Other than the ball not dropping for her, she played an outstanding game. Defensively, she did a great job of taking away the entry passes and challenged the shooters."

Kihm scored followed with a pair of free throws to cut the margin to 11-4, but Covington could only manage a Halley Roberts runner and a Julianna Simon free throw over the remainder of the half.

The visitors took advantage of Covington's offensive struggles by building a 19-7 lead at the break.

"We're still not handling the ball very well right now," Besecker explained. "We had a lot of turnovers in the first half, but I felt we did a better job of taking care of the ball in the second half."

Covington opened the second half with an Alyssa Angle lay-up, but that was the only field goal the Lady Buccs could make over the remainder of the third period.

Russia ran off 12 straight points before Simon connected on one of two free throws to make the score 31-10 heading into the fourth quarter.

The trend continued in the final frame as Covington's only field goal in the fourth came on a Chloe Shell jumper. The remaining three points came on three free throws on four attempts by Angle and Kihm.

"We missed a lot of shots, but I was very pleased with how well we executed the offense in regards to getting the ball inside," said Besecker. "In our last game against Milton we couldn't even get the pass inside without turning the ball over. Tonight we did a much better job of getting the ball into the post for open looks. The shots just didn't fall tonight, but our best option offensively is getting high percentage shots. Until tonight we were shooting 50% when we got the ball into the post."

Kihm led Covington with five points, while Angle dropped in four.

Russia was led by Roni Homan with a game-high 14 points.

Covington drops to 1-11 on the season and looks for continued improvement on Thursday at National Trail.
