JANUARY 24, 2009 - COVINGTON
It's been nearly six weeks since the Covington Lady Buccs have walked off the court as a winner.

So it wasn't a surprise to see the smiles on each one of the Lady Buccs' faces as they headed to the locker room after defeating Twin Valley South 60-50 on Saturday.

"We've scored a total of 81 points in our last four games, so to score 60 today and get us a win only helps our confidence," said a pleased Covington coach Chris Besecker. "It was really nice to get a win like this where we needed to make some plays in the fourth quarter to get the job done."

Alyssa Angle had a career day, leading the charge with a game-high 25 points.

"Alyssa's been playing well all year," Besecker praised of his junior floor leader. "She's been aggressive with the basketball, which is something we ask her to do. Tonight her shot was on."

Angle got Covington rolling with a trey to spark an 8-1 lead in the early moments of the game.

But Twin Valley South responded by closing out the opening frame on an 11-1 run to take a 12-9 lead.

"We hit a couple of big three's to start the game, but I felt we got impatient with the offense," Besecker explained. "We shot the ball too quickly on a few possessions there early and they went on a run."

Angle quickly got the Lady Buccs rolling again to start the second quarter with another of her five treys in the contest.

The Lady Bucc "D" then took over and held South to just seven points in the frame.

"Our defense sort of sparked us before the half," said Besecker. "We held them to seven points and it allowed us to get a lead at the half."

The second quarter gave Covington confidence, but the third quarter gave the home team the momentum.

Angle once again got Covington rolling with a trey and Carrie Spurgeon followed with a three-point play off of a Halley Roberts' assist.

"That pass by Roberts on a the back side to Spurgeon was a big play," said Besecker. "Halley's been playing well as of late. She's the type of kid who makes a lot of hustle plays for us."

The three-point play also pumped up the Covington team and it led to an 18-10 scoring advantage in the stanza and a 39-29 lead.

"The third quarter hasn't been very good to us this year, but the kids did a good job of making smart decisions with the basketball," Besecker emphasized. "We were able to get the ball into the post and run our offense the way we like."

As good as the third quarter was, the fourth quarter was even better for Covington.

The Lady Buccs remained aggressive with the basketball and it resulted in 27 free throw attempts in the period, 14 of which dropped in for points.

Alyssa Angle, who shot 16 of those free throws and making eight, put the game on her shoulders down the stretch.

"She had her best game of the season," said Besecker. "You could see her determination grow as the game went on."

Angle had plenty of help as freshmen Shelby Kihm and Julianna Simon scored 13 and 11 points respectively as Covington has three players in double figures for the first time this season.

The victory ends an eight-game losing skid for Covington and improves its record to 2-12 overall and 2-5 in Cross County Conference action.

But most importantly it gives the young team much needed confidence as conference leader Miami East comes to town on Monday.
