The Covington Lady Buccs saw the 2008-09 season come to an end Thursday in the second round of the sectional tournament in a 48-34 loss to Bethel.
The two teams hooked up for the second time as Covington drew a first round bye, while Bethel eliminated Newton in its opening round contest.
The first half went the way Covington had hoped as they Lady Buccs held a 9-8 lead after one and a 15-13 lead at the break.
Shelby Kilm scored on a pair of short jumpers in the opening frame, while Alyssa Angle connected on a 10-footer and Julianna Simon hit on a trey.
After Bethel took an 11-9 lead on a free throw and a runner to open the second period, Katie Dickey canned a jumper and Carrie Spurgeon hit on two free throws to make the score 13-11 midway through the frame.
Bethel tied the score on a lay-up, but Alyssa Angle closed out the first half scoring with her second jumper of the half to give Covington the lead and some momentum heading into the locker room.
The wheels fell of for the Lady Buccs in the third quarter as Bethel went on a 14-0 run to open the second half as Covington had some defensive breakdowns which resulted in easy baskets at the Bethel end of the floor.
Covington didn't score until Angle connected on a jumper with 2:10 left in the third and Julianna Simon followed with a trey to cut the Bethel lead to 27-20.
But the Lady Bees closed out the frame with a pair of baskets, while Covington could only manage a jumper by Spurgeon as the deficit increased to 31-22 with one quarter to play.
Covington continued to play hard in an attempt to get back into the contest and the result was a 12-point offensive output in the frame.
But Bethel continued beating the Lady Buccs down the floor for seven fourth quarter field goals to cruise to a 48-34 win.
Freshmen Shelby Kihm and Julianna Simon led the Lady Buccs with 8 points each, while Alyssa Angle, Katie Dickey and Carrie Spurgeon each scored 6 points.
Dickey, the lone senior in uniform, received a standing ovation from the Covington crowd while heading to the bench immediately after scoring her final basket of her high school career with .44 left.
