Missin' Hobs...
Renee Otte scored 11 points, but it was the absence of Shelby Hoblit that hurt Covington in a 42-34 loss to Tri-Village.

Alyssa Angle drills two of her six points for the Lady Buccs.

DECEMBER 18, 2008 - NEW MADISON
The loss of Shelby Hoblit due to an injury before the season started has never been more crucial than in Thursday's Cross County Conference match-up with Tri-Village.

"We really miss Shelby," said Covington coach Chris Besecker earlier in the week. "She brings so many intangibles to the game. She understands the game so well - what we're trying to do and how things need to be done. She's like an extra coach on the floor because she's vocal and will tell others where they need to be and what they need to do. We're missing her presence on the floor."

One intangible Hoblit brought to the game was defense inside the paint. She didn't bring a lot of size, but she knew how to play inside and did a lot of things that went unnoticed in the stat sheet.

Hoblit's absence was never more apparent than in Thursday's contest at Tri-Village as freshman Kayla Linkous had a field day against the Lady Buccs defense - a defense lacking the inside presence of Hobs.

Linkous torched Covington with a game-high 34 points, matching the offensive effort of the entire Covington team. The remaining Tri-Village players tallied eight points, which ultimately was the point differential in the contest.

Normally slow starters, the Lady Buccs managed to match Tri-Village point-for-point in the opening frame and closed the first period tied at 8-8.

Neither team could gain much of an advantage in the second quarter as the score went into the half with Tri-Village holding a one point lead, 22-21.

The Lady Bucc Defense was stellar in the third quarter and the offense did just enough to gain some momentum as Renee Otte scored five straight points to give Covington a 30-28 lead with one quarter to play.

That quarter was Linkous time as the freshman sparked a 14-4 run in the final frame to send Covington home with a 42-34 defeat.

Renee Otte led Covington with 11 points, while Alyssa Angle and Julianna Simon knocked down six points each.

The loss drops Covington to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in the Cross County Conference.

The Lady Buccs host Ansonia on Saturday.
