DECEMBER 28, 2009 - COVINGTON
It was a tale of two halves Monday night as Covington stormed out to a 29-7 halftime lead over Bethel only to see the Lady Bees battle back to cut the margin to eight points in the fourth quarter before the Lady Buccs held on for a 43-31 victory.

And Covington coach Chris Besecker singled out free throw shooting and turnovers as the difference between the two halves.

"We had a pretty good first half because we took care of the basketball and put the ball in the hole," Besecker explained. "In the second half we made poor decisions with the basketball and didn't shoot very well from the free throw line."

Covington was horrid from the charity stripe as it only converted on 5 of 16 free throws in the game and only 4 of 11 in the second half.

"I hate to keep harping on it, but our free throw percentage this year is horrendous," Besecker continued. "It's difficult to put games away when you don't convert at the free throw line. That's something we'll have to continue working on."

Solid shooting from the floor and outstanding rebounding at the offensive end sparked Covington to a fast start to the game.

After a Mercedes Nelson basket for Bethel began the scoring, Covington went on a a 12-0 run started by a trey by Carrie Spurgeon.

Alyssa Angle and Shelby Hoblit followed with stick backs off of missed free throws and two jumpers by Shelby Kihm made the score 11-2 to force a Bethel timeout with 3:24 left in the opening frame.

Angle hit on a Covington's lone free throw in five first half attempts and then closed out the first period with a jumper to make the score 14-3.

"We were able to get a lot of good looks against their zone in the first quarter," Besecker explained. "(Emily) Ellerbrook didn't play in the first quarter for them and that's one of their better defenders."

Ellerbrook entered the game in the second quarter as Bethel immediately went to a man defense, but the results were the same for Covington as a pair of treys by Angle and Julianna Simon and a Simon layup pushed the lead to 22-3.

Brook Cornett connected on a free throw attempt to stall the bleeding, but Angle opened the flood gates again with her second trey and a jumper. Shelby Hoblit followed with a short jumper of her own to increase the Covington lead to 29-4 with less than a minute to go in the half.

Bethel received a lay in from Mercedes Nelson and a free throw from Ellerbrook right before the half to make the score 29-7 at the break.

"When they went to man in the second we did a good job of moving the ball around quickly for the open shot," said Besecker. "But they (Bethel) sure cranked it up defensively in the second half and we didn't handle it very well."

Which resulted in a 10-0 run for the Lady Bees to start the second half before a Carrie Spurgeon trey with 1:08 left in the third.

Ellerbrook hit on a free throw moments later, but Angle closed out the frame for Covington with a layup to make the score 34-18 with one quarter to play.

And that quarter was all Emily Ellerbrook for Bethel and Carrie Spurgeon for Covington.

Ellerbrook starting things off in the fourth by scoring six straight points on a layup and four free throws. Kendal Banks followed with a jumper for the Lady Bees to cut the margin to 34-26 with 4:00 left in the game.

"(Emily) Ellerbrook got after it in the fourth quarter," Besecker praised. "That's the type of player she is for them. She picked up their entire team."

Spurgeon picked Covington up as well as she connected on a layup and followed two more Ellerbrook free throws with her third three-pointer of the game to push Covington's lead back to double digits, 39-28.

"That (the three pointer) was a big shot by Carrie," said Besecker. "They had everything going their way with all the momentum. That three gave us some breathing room to milk the clock."

It also took the wind out of Bethel's sails after it had expended so much energy at both ends of the floor to get back into the game. Plus, it forced the Lady Bees to send Covington to the free throw line.

And Covington made 4 of 6 free throws in the waning moments to seal the 12-point win, which ends a two-game losing skid and improves the Lady Buccs to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in the CCC.
