FEBRUARY 25, 2010 - BROOKVILLE
In a game where it was a shame someone had to lose, the Covington Lady Buccs disposed of CCC rival Bethel in the second round of the sectional tournament 46-39 at Brookville High School on Thursday.

"It was a good game and a big win for us," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "We move on and play FM (Franklin Monroe in the sectional final).

This was the second time this season the two teams had met as Covington won the first contest 43-31 on December 28th after Bethel came back from a 29-7 halftime deficit to make a game of it in the second half.

This time around it was Covington who fell behind as Bethel built a 17-13 halftime lead.

"We had some silly turnovers and never could get into a flow offensively (in the first half)," Besecker explained. "Then we had the foul trouble and that cost us."

It sure did as Alyssa Angle picked up her third foul and Shelby Hoblit was tacked with her fourth foul after Covington opened up the second half with a 10-1 run thanks to a pair of treys by Julianna Simon and Carrie Spurgeon, along with two baskets by Angle.

With the two senior leaders on the bench Bethel turned a 23-18 deficit into a 30-26 advantage by quarters end thanks to 12 points by Emily Ellerbrook in the finals 3:00 of the third quarter.

"With Hobs (Hoblit) and Angle on the bench in foul trouble, I wasn't comfortable with the 1-3-1 (defense), so we switched to a 2-3," Besecker said. "Ellerbrook was able to get open and lit us up from the outside."

Angle returned to start the fourth quarter and Covington immediately went on a 6-0 run to take a 32-30 lead. Five of those points came on a Simon trey and a runner, while Shelby Kihm connected on one of two free throw attempts.

Bethel responded to take the lead right back as Mackenzie Nelson connected on a short jumper and a free throw, but that would be the final lead of the contest for the Bees as Hoblit returned to the floor with 5:30 left on the clock.

From then on Bethel only managed to score just six points the rest of the way.

"Having them (Hoblit and Angle) on the floor makes a huge difference defensively," said Besecker. "The key for us tonight was having Alyssa playing the baseline. We were able to prevent Ellerbrook from getting off any good shots in the fourth quarter."

Ellerbrook ended up with 18 points in the contest, but none in the final frame.

Meanwhile, Simon continued her hot hand with 10 of her 18 points coming in the fourth quarter.

"She (Simon) hit some big shots down the stretch," Besecker stated.

Covington also hit some big free throws in the fourth quarter.

"We were 8-for-10 from the line in the fourth quarter," explained Besecker. "In a tight game like this, the free throws make a big difference."

It did in this one as Covington was 6-for-6 from the line after the game was tied at 35-35 on a basket by Bethel's Brook Cornett.

Covington also received a fourth trey from Simon and a layup by Halley Roberts to seal the seven-point victory.

The Lady Buccs held the edge on the boards 25-19, including a significant advantage in the second half, 15-8.

Shelby Kihm led Covington with seven rebounds, while Simon, Hoblit and Roberts each had four rebounds.

Ellerbrook led Bethel with nine rebounds, seven of those coming in the first half.

Covington also held the advantage in turnovers with just eight to the 16 turnovers Bethel committed.

The victory moves Covington into the sectional final on Saturday against Franklin Monroe. Game time is slated for 2:00pm.
