A Win For The Seniors...
Kristin Swabb and the senior class played their final game in the Covington gymnasium and came away with a big win over rival Bradford.

Senior Alyssa Angle has been the straw that sturred the drink over the past three years from the point guard position.

FEBRUARY 4, 2010 - COVINGTON
The Covington Lady Buccs honored their six seniors Thursday night with a hard-fought 42-28 victory over rival Bradford. Playing in their final home game for Covington were Alyssa Angle, Shelby Hoblit, Halley Roberts, Erin Waterfall, Kristin Swabb and Carole Bayse.

"This was a nice win for our seniors," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "But it sure wasn't easy."

That's because Bradford played aggressive defense and challenged virtually every shot by Covington - particularly in the first half.

"We couldn't throw the ball in the ocean in the first half," Besecker explained. "We really struggled offensively."

Bradford didn't exactly light up the scoreboard either in the first half and the result was a low scoring affair at the break with Covington holding a slim 15-13 lead.

But the visiting Railroaders caught fire in the early moments of the third quarter by scoring the first six points of the second half to take a 19-15 lead.

"They came out in the second half and had a nice run that gave them a lead," said Besecker. "They scored on a bucket to finish off the first half and six straight points to start the second, so it was an eight-point run for them."

Needing a spark, Covington leaned on Alyssa Angle and Carrie Spurgeon who had both failed to score a point until midway through the third frame. But the duo erupted by combining for 20 of Covington's 27 second half points.

"We tried pounding the ball inside and all of our points in the first half came from our post players," Besecker explained. "Once Alyssa and Carrie got going in the second half we were able to get some balanced scoring."

It all started with a huge trey by Spurgeon.

"They (Spurgeon and Angle) hit some big shots to give us some cushion on the scoreboard," Besecker said.

Covington went on an 18-5 run to close out the third quarter and then controlled the final frame 9-4 to claim the 14-point win.

Spurgeon led the Lady Buccs with 11 points, while Shelby Hoblit tallied a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Alyssa Angle knocked down 9 points, all in the second half.

Bradford was led by an impressive outing from Amy Smith, who scored a game-high 14 points.

Covington closes out the season with two straight road contests, first at New Bremen on Saturday and concluding at Franklin Monroe next Thursday.
