FEBRUARY 20, 2010 - BROOKVILLE
In tournament basketball, you better bring your "A" game each and every night or you'll be turning in your jerseys in a blink of an eye.
Covington found that out first hand in the opening round of the sectional tournament at Brookville on Saturday as the underdog Cedarville Indians built a 19-12 halftime lead and had the Lady Buccs on the ropes.
"We watched film of them (Cedarville) and that was very misleading," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "We underestimated their quickness. They beat us off the dribble a good bit in the first half."
For one half of basketball Cedarville played with more hustle and intensity, looking to be the team that wanted it more. The Lady Buccs had the look of a team facing the reality of their season ending prematurely.
But Covington picked up its own intensity in the third quarter and the result was a 12-2 scoring advantage in the frame for a 24-21 lead.
"We didn't match up well with them in man, so we switched to a zone in the second half," Besecker explained. "Our defensive effort in the second half was much better."
And Alyssa Angle took over the game at the offensive end for the Lady Buccs. The senior scored all 12 of her points in the second half, including two huge treys that sparked a comeback victory.
"Alyssa knocked down some big shots for us," Besecker said. "That was the key (offensively) in the second half."
Cedarville opened the final frame with a jumper and a free throw to take a 25-24 lead, but Angle's second trey lit a fire under Covington.
Halley Roberts followed with a stick back before Angle pushed the lead to 31-25 with a jumper to force a Cedarville timeout with 3:33 left to go.
Covington took the air out of the ball the rest of the way, relying on a stingy defense that held Cedarville to a single point in the final 3:00.
And fittingly, it was Angle who put the dagger into Cedarville's tournament hopes with a lay in with under a minute to go.
"We were definitely out of sync tonight," said Besecker. "We dug ourselves a hole, but the kids responded in the second half."
Controlling the boards was a significant factor, especially in the second half.
"We talked about that (rebounding) before the game and how important it was for us to control the boards," Besecker said. "We did a lot better job of that tonight than we did in our last two games."
The result was a win to open the tournament as Covington takes on Bethel this Thursday at 7:30pm.
