NOVEMBER 28, 2009 - COVINGTON
Unlike Friday's contest at Houston, Lady Bucc basketball was on display Saturday in a 51-21 victory over Fairlawn in the home opener.

Covington fans saw the aggressive, in-your-face defense; the crashing of the boards; and the execution of an offense that resulted in high percentage shots.

"The kids got after it a little bit more tonight," said a pleased Covington coach Chris Besecker. "We hustled at the defensive end and got on the boards much better than we did last night (against Houston)."

And it took a change in strategy that got Covington rolling.

"We decided to change things up and come out in a full court press," Besecker explained. "I think we needed something different to light a spark under thee kids."

Which worked as Covington harassed Fairlawn all over the floor, forcing turnover after turnover in holding the Lady Jets to just one field goal in the first half.

Meanwhile, Alyssa Angle set the tone offensively for Covington in the first three offensive possessions. The senior aggressively attacked the zone defense of Fairlawn and scored six of Covington's 14 first quarter points.

"Alyssa attacked the basket and got us off to a fast start offensively," said Besecker. "That helps against the teams that spread out defensively in the zone."

This opened up the perimeter and Julianna Simon took advantage with a game-high 20 points - 15 of those coming on five treys.

"Julianna can hit the shots from the outside," Besecker stated. "But we have to be able to create shots around the basket to set that up. That's something we were able to do tonight."

It also allowed Covington to build a 23-4 lead at the half and expand the margin to 43-14 after three quarters of play.

Besecker called off the dogs in the final frame as Covington cruised to the 30-point win, 51-21.

Angle tallied 10 points on the night (all coming in the first half) to go along with the 20 turned in by Simon.

Shelby Kihm was a force inside the paint with seven points, while Halley Roberts contributed with six points. Carrie Spurgeon and Aubrye Cain each dropped in four points for the Lady Buccs.

The victory improves Covington to 1-1 on the young season. The Lady Buccs open CCC play on Thursday as Mississinawa Valley comes to town.
